I for one never have used the video feature of my Canon 5d 11. I just wonder how many of us use the video and how many don't? If you do use the video feature is this the reason you would upgrade to a new model?

I primarily select my cameras for still photo capability, but do need/want video occasionally. I certainly consider video capability when choosing a camera. Having all the lenses and everything else is a huge asset. The only additional thing I need to carry is a decent microphone. I would certainly down rate a camera that didn't have decent video capability. It costs nothing extra yet adds a lot of value, as does an articulated screen. Would I pay extra for it? Maybe not, but I certainly wouldn't pay more to have less functionality.

Like Mac and Bebulamur, I shoot with a Df, and one of the main draws for me was the fact that it doesn't do video. That said, I've only shot one video with my D7000, and that was a spoof commercial that my sons put together and asked me to shoot for them. You can see it here, but be warned, it's rather silly. I wonder about those boys sometimes.

The cost of the Df isn't a result of not having video.

why do we pay for features that we never use? I guess the answer is that it comes with the camera body.
Could or would a body cost less if it did not have the video feature?

If you have a 5D MK II and you're not using video, you've really been missing out.

I would not buy a camera that didn't have at least HD video.

The cost of the df is only the result of marketing 'a retro' camera that had nothing real to offer other than looks. Read all the reviews at the time and almost all had less than flattering take on it.

This does not mean the df is a bad camera, far from it. It just means it is way over priced for what it is. For a lesser price I turn all the features off in my cameras and have the same 'retro' meaning full manual control w/o the 'look' and privilege to say 'I have a df!'.

That may well be true, but is it relevant to the discussion. Cost and features are often completely independent things. That was my point. In the electronic world often the features are there, just not enabled. In the Canon world look at Magic Lantern as an example. All sorts of stuff that Canon could charge for, but doesn't...

If canon offered a dslr without video at $500 less then one with video I would buy it. If it was $50 less I wouldn't buy it because I believe the resale would be higher with the video.

I can only assume you don't have grandchildren and don't do much foreign travel. Video is indispensable in those two cases. And DSLR video is of such high quality that it's replacing other video methods.

Video might be advantageous in the cases you mention, but certainly not indispensable. People had grandchildren and traveled to foreign countries long before there was ever video.

Why is that relevant? I don't have children, let alone grandchildren. I have done a bunch of foreign travel which has no impact on my video usage. Can you explain the connection?

As several others have said, I also have three Nikons and I have never turned on the video function. Can't really imagine that I will because I don't think about it.

Yesterday I was shooting a Robbie Knievel jump. I was the only DSLR that I saw among hundreds of phones. The person next to me casually asked me "does that shoot movies?" I was initially stumped...had never given it a thought. I eventually answered yes. I continued happily on with my D750's six frames per sec. I got lots of good shots of Robbie doing wheelies and speed runs but just as he launched off the ramp a sea of elbows and iPhones rose up in my face. It wouldn't have made any difference if I had been using a Hollywood cinema setup.

It's just a ploy for the manufactures to make you pay for something that you never utilize. Like cable t.v. or the dish bundle up cheap programs with one or two that maybe you would take to watch that one but you have to pay for 5 or 6 that you wont. The local cable company came out with pay for just the ones you watch ,but it's just as expensive (if not more) than taking the whole bundle. You just can't win. And no I don't use the video.Am on the 4th camera and never used it yet and probably never will.

It costs next to nothing to include video capability in a digital camera, and there are many people who do use video (myself included--I've shot a number of serious documentaries for TV on DSLRs). I'm sure there are plenty of features on your camera you personally never use, so should manufacturers leave off those capabilities because only some camera owners use them?

Don't know if my Olympus E-30 shoots video. No interest in finding out. Totally useless.
