AARP?

I got a renewal notice from AARP, and I'm wondering why I would renew. The price has gone from $10 to $16, which is still very low, but I never get any benefits. The monthly magazine gets tossed into the recycling bin as soon as it arrives.

I don't know if you ever go to Outback Steakhouse, but they offer a 15% discount to anyone with an AARP card. It's not openly advertised, but they will give to you if asked. That 15% pays for the tip that would otherwise come out of my pocket. Since I dine at Outback at least 10 times per year, it pays for the cost increase. I also save on Motel rooms and entrance to the local arboretum.

I enjoy the magazine; it has interesting articles, useful tips and health guidance. The AARP lobbies for our rights.

I always ask about discounts. Most places that offer AARP discounts also offer military or senior discounts & I don't have to be a member of AARP. We quit AARP several years ago after we decided we didn't agree with some of their stances on political issues.

AARP is a left-wing wacko group that gave us the abomination called Obamacare (since AARP sells insurance, they figured they'd make a fortune off it). The idea that it represents people other than it's administration is lost in reality. It is closely tied-in with the left wing of the Democrat party. So, if you support everything the Left does in tearing down America, by all means join AARP.

Just some observations and thoughts: AARP is really an insurance agency, which, much like AAA, offers other services to its members. I, too, find them a bit liberal for my personal taste and did not renew several years ago. What I am finding is that many, if not most, local businesses who give AARP discounts also give the same discount to members of other organizations like AAA. What I also find is that, in most cases, if I feign having forgotten my AARP card when asked the business goes ahead and gives me the discount anyway.

I wondered why Hanoi Jane received the occasional blurbs from them. Thanks for the heads-up.

You DO know that this is the "chit chat, non photography" section of the forum and it's completely voluntary to read posts in this section....right?
