A question on insurence?

After reading a few stories here on the Hog I thought I'd better ask some questions prior to shipping three bodies to Canon CPS. I have separate insurance on all my gear, covered anywhere in the world and that includes even if I forget and leave something behind. Here's the catch, I had to find out if I needed double insurance meaning coverage while shipping with FedEx. I had to go three layers up with Safeco to get the final answer. and that was yes I did. There reasoning was when I turned it over to "a" shipping company that they (Safeco) was totally out of the picture. I had talked to several other photographers in the same boat and they all thought that their insurance company had them covered. In the end I shipped with the U.S. Post Office. Faster and cheaper then any other company unless your talking about overnight with next day delivery for a mere $150.00 . Check and don't get caught short.

I would never ship with the Post Office. Always ship insured with a carrier.

I did ship insured with the Post Office, for the full amount. For the money much faster service too.

I did too until I got the insurance and talked with other photographers that never insured because they thought they were covered with basically the same coverage that I have now.

I can find hundreds, actually thousands, of people who will testify that is backwards. Half of Alaska is fully on speaking terms with FedEx, and they all cuss at them.

Because FedEx is the worst of the lot. People here don't tend to like the Post Office, but they don't hate it either. The others, they hate.

If you live in a well populated area of the Lower-48, FedEx might be useful to ship to other such areas. UPS is better. You can ship via UPS to Alaska, but there is no point to it. Shipping FedEx to Alaska is like playing Russian Roulette with three or four bullets instead of just one, not just dumb but really dumb! And near as I can tell from what others say that is true for shipping to any location outside the US.

Shipping USPS Priority Mail, with insurance and tracking for anything significant, is by far the only sane method if you ship to Alaska. We actually get it that way!

That's what the old man said when his mule died. Never did that before.

I can tell you that buying insurance from Fed Ex is useless; they will not pay on a claim without going through hours on the phone arguing with them and then when they do, they pay on about 50 cents on the dollar. I will never ship with Fed Ex again. If there was any justice where I live, I'd take them to court for the other half of what they owe me, about $350.00.

I have used USPS for going on 30 years and have never lost an item yet. Great job USPS, keep up the stellar job that you do for all Americans.

Have some questions about your situation. If you thought coverage applied everywhere what caused you to question need for additional coverage for shipment? My guess is the shipper wanted to sell you additional coverage. Did Safeco specifically tell you there was no coverage under their policy for shipment or was it Safeco policy would be secondary to shipper coverage? Anytime a carrier tells you tells you there is no coverage you need to have them direct you to the specific section of the policy that addresses this. Don't assume they are the same policy you may have.
I have been in Risk Management for some 40yrs and I learned something long ago "What the big print gives you the little print takes away".

In recent years the US Post Office made great gains. In most cases (in my experience) the USPS now cost less, and are as fast as the "other guys" in the brown trucks. The USPS also frequently makes the "final delivery" for the "Big Brown" trucks. Finally, I'm not now, nor have I ever been a member of, or related to anyone working for the USPS.

Had to chuckle at your disclaimer!

I have noticed more and more packages from UPS being delivered to my local post office for delivery. Not much room for error there in my one horse town.

Same "disclaimer."
