I don't know how you arrived at the "bottom line",at least according to the source you cited. The big time so called ideal optimum levels is a dream for the military leaders,so comparing what we have and what we'd like is not realistic or necessary. No way could this ideology ever be funded and many would probably agree it is not needed,a point that could be argued. The article pretty much answers my questions and there is no way our capabilities can be construed as inadequate. The "big war" people talk about won't be fought with men and bullets....

This doom and gloom rhetoric regarding our military is not valid. Discretion in getting involved in everyone's affairs might be a thought.

Let me rephrase and say that I don't know how they arrived at the bottom line, having done their evaluation. Presenting and flavoring it with more reality of what our capabilities are with respect to projected needed use would have been better, I think.

I like this chart better. It pretty clearly shows the decline in "military" spending since 2009.

Factors not captured include "worn out/used up/not replaced" equipment plus all the human experience that has been lost due to force reduction.
...huh? military spending went down after the Iraq was "ended" (or at least cooled down)... also, I don't know if you understand, but the heritage foundation is one of the most conservative institutions in our country and an outspoken critic of Obama from the getgo.... and closely aligned with the notorious daily signal.

...from their join page:

Join the most influential conservative group in America
For the past 42 years, The Heritage Foundation has led the conservative movement…and now you can be part of this exclusive group.

http://dailysignal.com/2016/07/27/if-the-obama-administration-adopts-a-no-first-use-nuclear-strategy-it-could-cripple-us-security/ here's an article about us keeping a pre-emptive nuclear strike on the table

http://dailysignal.com/2009/01/22/the-need-for-change-in-philadelphia-%E2%80%93-not-threatening-voters/ this comes out 3 months after the election, right at inauguaration. here's the wiki on it:

Quote:
The New Black Panther Party voter intimidation case is a political controversy in the United States concerning an incident that occurred during the 2008 election. The New Black Panther Party and two of its members, Minister King Samir Shabazz and Jerry Jackson, were charged with voter intimidation for their conduct outside a polling station in Philadelphia.
The Department of Justice later narrowed the charges against Minister King Shabazz and dismissed the charges against the New Black Panther Party and Jerry Jackson.

not the whole thing... you summarized their position very very well in the graph, though

here's a pro-military site's take on an exciting scenario... the US against the world! much more interesting than that dry right-wing article you posted.

in case you're not reading it, short answer: We'd kick ass, without our nukes.

Did you actually read my reply? I agree with their points, but not their overall assessment.

It took me that long to skim the article. Did I read every word? No. Do I understand a little about readiness? Hopefully. Common sense? Hopefully.

I'm not about to get into a contest arguing the readiness of our military, but I'm comfortable that it isn't as deficient as the article portrayed, particularly when looking at the dream teams' increased numbers of battalions, ships, equipment, etc. and the profound abilities of what we currently have when compared to our potential adversaries.

Again,we are not prepared to spend the money for a doomsday preparation and not greatly enhance what we currently possess. In the long run,a firm negotiating table might be a better effort.

While the Heritage Foundation is a super source, they are not without bias.

shit, if trump get's elected, we could sell off the rest of our military equipment and just threaten them with nuclear destruction... after we've glassed over a few desert countries, and maybe Russia, too... the world will bow to our supremacy.

I personally think that we should be more assertive and less tolerant in a lot of respects. That doesn't mean we have to go to war,but we could bitch slap someone and be capable of taking care of any who interfere,be it economic or severe. When some figure that business as usual is not an option, maybe some of the BS will stop.

yeah, nobody talks back when you bitch-slap them with nuclear arms... I mean, the Japanese believed that Hirohito was God, but 2 bombs and they're all anti-military.

LOL! By the way, I almost had dinner with Hirohito in 1972. I was the alternate attendee in my battalion for a so called gold plate dinner with the Emperor when I was with the 3rd Force Service Regiment in Okinawa.

"Almost" only counts in horseshoes, hand grenades and atom bombs.
