Many thanks for your comments and interest, MTG! Actually, most GIs -- if they were lucky -- experienced WW II as a series of tidbits spaced between longer periods of boredom. Who needs major events which might send you home in a casket? Your avatar says you're a retired jeweler. You would have had a ball in the barter economy of Occupied Germany, before the D-Mark arrived. Plenty of beautiful jewelry on the Black Market, on sale for American cigarettes.
