Here is the third photo of the Piper. This one is his second choice for being his favorite. I will most likely try to upload his first choice for Wednesday's viewing. Of course as usual, C&C are always welcome. Thank you.

Best Regards,
Tom

P.S. Once again, please download to see the image in better detail. Thank you.

Beautifully done, Tom. Is he winking at us? Nice touch, and love the inclusion of the bagpipes in this one. Grounds the shot perfectly!

Randy & Bill,

Hey guys, I finally got back from picking my wife up at the Columbus airport earlier this morning.

Thank you once again. Yes, I think the bagpipes are a plus for the image. He actually chose that pose and was just trying to look a little rough, rugged, or intimidating or some such descriptive verb.

he last one is yet to come, so probably tomorrow it will be up and running. He and I seem to like the one for tomorrow the best . . . but it is very similar.

Hope you aren't too bored seeing the same type of shot several times. The actual 8x10" prints look really nifty.

Best Regards,
Tom

Cathy,

Thank you very much for your comments. If you get a chance, here is the link for the final and 4th image of the Piper http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-402135-1.html#6756817 which is believed to be the best of them all. He was a great man to work with and photograph, and so very friendly and cooperative. Thanks again.

Best Regards,
Tom

Tom, I finally got around to taking a look at you Piper image. Overall I think you did quite well. Although, you and I have different but yet similar processing styles I would have probably taken a different approach. Thats not to say there is anything wrong with yours.

This looks to have mostly mid-tones where I would have probably toned some areas down to create more shadows. Darkened his wrinkles for more detail and highlighted his lips. To me they are too dark. Maybe a little more separation from your subject and background. I'm not sure of the crop but I would have liked to have seen more of the bagpipe. Thats just me and it may have been your initial intention when you captured him but couldn't have. Again, overall very good and I'm pretty sure you know this is just an observation of how I would have approached it.

Hey Dave,

Thanks for looking and giving me your expert critique. I agree with you on the lips - too dark, now you point it out. I don't burn down too much on the face since I always tend to make it too dark and then I get upset with myself. I could darken some wrinkles a bit more and pull some whites up a bit for more dramatic contrast, but I am always leery about that sort of thing since, as I have said, I always tend to go overboard and end up with a white and dark mess. If not that, I get things looking a bit muddy!

I am constantly trying to avoid over processing and muddiness since I battled that a lot in my beginning B&W conversions, and tend to try to stay away from getting to that point again. Also, as I had said before in another post, I did not have my 70-200 mm lens, so I did what I could do with my 24-70 mm lens trying to get the depth of field correctly separating The Piper properly from the background. Thanks for looking.

If you get a chance, look at this one, too, at http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-402135-1.html#6756817 Thanks Dave.

Best Regards,
Tom
