My wife and I are planning to take a driving trip from Sacramento up through the Canadian Rockies and I was looking for some suggestions on places to go, especially good landscape spots. I am familiar with Banff and Jasper, but understand that Alberta has some beautiful provincial parks as well. We have been to Glacier National park a few times but wanted to head up north. Any suggestions of places to visit or books that might provide guidance to prime photo locations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Have you been to Crater Lake. The drive up there is awesome. Also Washington and Oregon have many water falls that make for good photo ops. I have not been to Canada so I will be watching for your photos.
Lake Louise and Morain lake shouldn't be missed. Take the 1A hiway from Banff to Lake Louise for some great scenery and a chance of seeing wildlife. Johnson Canyon is very scenic if you're up for a bit of a walk. There is a newly opened (year before last) skywalk off of the Banff Jasper Hiway. Since there is no parking there you need to stop at the Athabasca Glacier lodge and take the bus from there to the skywalk. Of course there is lots of great scenery all along the drive from Lake Loouise to Jasper.

Banff and Jasper have many opportunities for exploration, and the Icefields Parkway is a must. Yoho, Kootenay, Glacier (Canada), Revelstoke NP's are all possibilities in that same area. The ebooks by Darwin Wiggett are both wonderful to look at and excellent resources to get explicit directions and ideas for shooting. My own favorite of the "extra" Rockies parks of BC and Alberta was Yoho, which was full of photo ops, totally uncrowded, and fun to explore. Another area I enjoyed for exploring and picture-taking was the Kananaskis area (Alberta Provincial Park) between the Banff/Canmore area and the Waterton/Glacier parks.
Be sure to travel through Kananaskis Country. Spectacular scenery and your greatest chanceof seeing Grizzlies.
Waterton Lakes National Park is the twin of Glacier. Gorgeous scenery there as well.
Get up very early (sun rise) to catch the best colours and cloud formations. You can always go back to bed. Sunset also of course.
Look for a spot in the Lake Louise vicinity called "Meadow in the Sky". All around gorgeous scenery, especially wild flowers. Don't miss it.

We stayed in Invermere BC a couple years ago and did auto tours into all the nearby parks, basically day trips from our home base. Great scenery all around. Mostly went up to Radium Hot Springs and east to access the parks.
Go to
www.TravelAlberta.comscroll to the bottom to order a travel info package. I believe it is the top item on the list.
Enjoy your trip up here
Be prepared for the Northern Lights. We discovered the "show" after dinner while camping in the back country around Jasper. A good reason to bring camera support and a positive mindset. Before you go, read up on cture setting choices so you're ready.
Thanks for all of the great suggestions everyone. It looks like good weather for the next couple of weeks in the Banff area, so we may hop in the car and head north from Sacramento.
