Spent July 4th weekend touring the 83rd Hopi Festival in Flagstaff, The Wupatki Ruins and the Watchtower at the east end of the Grand Canyon. The Watchtower just reopened after being closed for 5 years and going thru renovations. It was a great trip. Posting a few photos to share with you all.

Interesting shots of the ruins and tower.

Thanks to the media (esp Hollywood westerns) and movie industry we have a Hopi? drummer with a High Plains Sioux/Lakota style warbonnet in new age modern dye colors, Plains style breast armor and then add what appear to be Doc Marten's or one of the imitation styles. Isn't assimilation wonderful? In the eastern Cherokee reservation a guy who posed for pictures with the tourists also wore a Sioux style warbonnet and when asked he said the tourists expect it and when he wore Cherokee styles (turban, often of fur) he didn't get as much business. He was just trying to make a good living for his family.

One of my student teachers was Navaho and traveled around to the Pow Wows. She had multiple "Jingle Dance" dresses in different styles. She said that you got members of tribes from all over the US, Canada and Mexico who did the Pow Wow circuit. It led to a lot of clothing styles and dances getting passed around and new ones appearing that had never existed before. She thought is was both good to have new things and bad that the traditions were getting mixed up to the point that some who did not live on the reservations did not really know their own tribe's styles very well. I agree with her.

Nice series of images. We have been there and done that in the past and always enjoy it. the comments from robertieri are very appropriate and informative. In reply to LennyP4868: you see a lot of native Americans in the SW wearing glasses.
