Got It Right, For Once!

For some reason, I have trouble getting good detail when shooting anything black (like a blackbird), or red (like a cardinal). So, I was really elated when I got this shot...perhaps it is my new D750 that made the difference.

Your back ground was right for good contrast and composition is excellent. Black and white both can be shade that hard to get right.
Good detail and every thing else works for this one.

Good shot. Sure the camera gets part of the credit, but you're the one who set it up.

Good Job. I'm a firm believer in good equipment does matter.

jradose, I think you are blaming yourself for something that is beyond your control. Totally black subjects are very difficult to photograph, because, unless the light is 'just right', there is very little contrast within the subject. Think of the relatively few Black Lab pictures posted here; the rest were not worth posting. We had a Black Lab for 14 years and have very few good pictures of her, not from lack of trying, but little detail shows up--the fur is smooth and all black. Not your fault, "it's the nature of the beast"! A young pup on the other hand is all wrinkles and fluff so there are more details.

You nailed this one for sure. You even managed to not blow out the highlights in the background.
