One of the places I do enjoy is the Napa Valley area with all of its wineries. A must would be the Napa Valley Train and its gourmet meal ride. Reservations are needed and the sooner made the best chance of getting what you want. The coast of California is absolutely beautiful and does provide more opportunities for photos than one can take. Enjoy your trip and keep it leisurely and you'll enjoy it and have lots of pleasant memories.

You've received lots of great advice. You'll need a year's sabbatical in Northern California to begin to feel like you've seen it.
I would add that October is a good month for seeing the aspen change colors in the Sierra in places such as Hope Valley which is just South of Lake Tahoe (Google California Fall Colors and you can find sites that will give you weekly updates on the best places to go.)
Also, if you like wildlife photography, in October the refuges in the Sacramento Valley (Gray Lodge, Sacramento NWR, Colusa NWR) will be starting to get the early migrant waterfowl; they will be much more numerous a month later but some of the hundreds of thousands of birds will have arrived in October.

Enjoy

Mike

Forget it, there's just too much to see and photograph in the West. Just move out here.

That's the absolute best advice I have gotten so far. If I happen to run into a job available, I just may do that..........................

you have such a chance, click away. Just across the Golden Gate is the Battery, start clicking there and reload for Muir Woods. Day one and more than a 1,000 clicks. When you reach Crescent City (a million clicks later) do not miss the chance to click yourself into oblivion with the trifecta of Seascape and light house, Monster Elk in full display, and the greatest display of giant Redwood trees on the face of the earth. Later on in the Gold Country you can visit and click away at Murphy's big trees a whole different type of giant Redwood tree. If time allows take a day trip from Petaluma to the Napa Sonoma wine country, and click away. Later on in your trip you will be in the middle of the Amador wine country, snap, click and taste your way across California. Mt. Shasta the home of the first Americans story of creation, Mt. Lassen and an unbelievable hike to the lip of an active Volcano. Between the two are fields of Obsidian and Rhyolite the back bone of trade before the white man and his fur driven obsession.

When on CA 1 north of Ragged Point and south of Big Sur, do not miss Mc Way Falls in Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park. Mc Way Creek flows off the top of a bluff and pours onto a sandy beach in a cove off the ocean. Awesome Photo Op! You can see it on Google Maps. The whole Big Sur Coast is an fantastic Photo Op, world class! You'll be stopping frequently.
