Computer problems

Recently my computer was overheating and shutting down. I took it to a highly recommended computer tech. After a week, it was still running hot and shutting down, this after paying $75 for a tuneup. The tech said it was caused by an update that did not land properly and was running around looking for its spot. I tried many different things myself until the light came on. I picked up a can of canned air and shot it into the exhaust vent. You should have seen the dust fly! My computer runs cool now.

I'm not thinking very highly about this so called computer tech! The 1st thing he should have done was to check the fans and exhaust vents. The malarkey he was giving you about about some update not working properly and causing your computer to over heat sounds like BS to me.

Overheating is the biggest fail point on most computers, and second only to the fail point where the charger brick plugs into laptops.

Canned air is paramount, blow into all openings and into the intake and exhaust vent of laptops.

The plugin jack is another item altogether and fails most laptops. Don't jostle, tug or jerk it around and unplug it from the computer when not in use. Biggest reason, "my daughter walked past and pulled the damn laptop off the desk, tripping over the cord".

It's a multi hundred fix OEM and less than $100 for a tech who know's what he/she is doing. The replacement jack is $6 on eBay, but the labor kills. Complete disassembly required.

Outside of that, life is long for most good hardware these days. I've probably done 100 or more jack replacements. Like new.

Once in a while one should take the side cover off and blow the dust out and clean the vents, carefully, and with the power off. They DO collect a lot of dust, which is a thermal insulator.

Vacuum everything including vents and fans (with power down), especially the heat sink and fan over the CPU periodically (and demand your $75 back from the supposed "tech"). Blowing the dust just moves it around, vacuuming removes it from the environment.

I agree with Trix, you should not have to pay for shabby work. Glad you had that can now go buy a couple more- extra's always help. That's my 2 cents LOL :) :)

If there's dust on the back, there'll be plenty more inside. Open the cover and run the vacuum brush gently around inside. Not for the heavy handed, but I've never had a problem.

The sad thing about this story is that discontent about repairs is not just computers. Cars, appliances, and cameras are just a few. Your money will be taken and the problems remain.

And this "tech" never looked inside the case? I take mine apart every month or so and clean them out. When you have one or more fans pulling air in, you know there's going to lots of other stuff following that air.

That's the first thing I do when I repair a computer. You would be surprised at how many times I found that caked on dust was the only problem the computer had.

You're right. it was BS. The first thing he should have done is cleaned the whole interior of the computer; that is standard procedure in a repair process; especially if their are over heating conditions. I'd go back to the tech and get my money back. Be careful with blowing air or vacuuming a computer; doing so can create static charges inside the electronic parts and damage them. The proper way to clean is to either have the parts removed and have them cleaned professionally or get a good hand held blower you self pump and blow it out that way.

The best and most complete way of cleaning the dust from a computer is removing the covers, taking the computer outside and blow it out with a leaf blower. I have used this method many times and it is more effective than compressed canned air.
