This is newly retired (really disqualified) DC SMOOSH. She is the first to come home (from a litter of seven) after being asked to retire for stopping on the track. I posted images of two of her sisters, Ginger and Mollie in "Sport Photography". Smooshy is fitting right in adapting to her retirement.

She is beautiful and she is a whole lot luckier than her siblings. She has a forever home and people to love her.

Her Siblings have it pretty good too. I own them all and responsible for them where ever they are. I was just down for a visit and make sure they are happy and well cared for. They will all come home to Wisconsin and find a couch when they are done doing what they love to do.

She looks like the cat who has got the cream - which she has of course. Greyhounds are the nicest couch potatoes in the world. Well done for giving her a good home.

That's wonderful. I didn't know that any of the racing dogs could lead a life like that.

They're great dogs and pets and lowered the squirrel and cat population in my area

Great dogs! She was smarter then the rest of the litter, stopping on the track got her to a couch position sooner.

Glad to see your greyhound gets love. I heard mistreatment of them at Mexican Race Tracks some years back. As you stated, after retirement many were adopted. From everywhere.

She is a beauty. If people would only refuse to attend dog races, maybe it could be go the way of the Dodo bird. As long as there is a demand there will be a supply.
People have no idea what goes on behind the scenes of horse and dog racing.

cameranut: Please look a little closer. I own Racing Greyhounds. I do know what goes on behind the scenes because I've been behind the scene. One of the reasons to post Racing Greyhound pictures was to show the truth to photographers who may want to make images of racing Greyhounds. It's very important to me that people know that Racing Greyhounds are owned by People just like you and I. I would never allow my dogs to be mistreated. All of my dogs come home to be placed in forever homes after their racing careers.

I'm sure most of what you believe goes on behind the scenes are fueled by internet garbage used to support casino gambling and fund the animal protection industry. You may of course be opposed to racing or gambling for morel reasons and I will respect your opinion. Please do not infer that the dogs are mistreated. Or you can tell me what you witnessed and I will see to it that the criminals are dealt with. (I have 30 years LE and 6 years as a Humane officer)

I know nothing about horse racing. (maybe a little but I don't follow it)

Thank you for reading this and taking time to post about my pictures.
Best wishes to you and yours.

David

At the county fair a couple of years ago, there was a greyhound rescue group with dogs up for adoption. A lot of the dogs had come from the race track and had been abused--they had photos of them with their ribs sticking out looking very malnourished. Luckily they were rescued and received proper care to get them healthy again to find a good home in which to be a couch potato.

David, I was under the impression that you were one of the ones who do rescues. There are several reputable rescue groups who take in retired Greyhounds. If your dogs are some of the lucky ones that are allowed to retire and come home or be adopted, that's commendable. However, I'm sure you are aware that not all who raise / race dogs have the animal's welfare at heart. Any time there is a lot of $$$$$'s to be made someone is going to do whatever it takes to make as much money as possible, and if that means killing the ones that aren't prime race material-----so be it. When a dog has a litter, not all the pups will be considered "race quality". There is no money to be made by keeping all of them as they will require vaccinations, worming, food, etc. In Spain, the ones who aren't winners are tortured in various ways. Of course, when you consider what they do to bulls, it's not surprising. As for the gambling: as long as it's not my money.
I respect your experience and knowledge but you can't be at all the races at all times to see first hand what is happening. Strange as it may sound, people have been known to break laws, especially where money is a concern.

cameranut: you may be right about Spain. I don't know. Everything else you report is internet propaganda, maybe from long ago.
There is money involved as it it a business however how can you abuse an animal and make it perform better ?
If a dog is not fast enough it is "graded off" and goes into retirement. Like Smoosh. At the end of their career NGA can account for at least 95% of dogs that are "petted out"or returned to the farms for breeding. The other 5% may be poor record keeping or a trainer may keep a retired hound.
As for puppies that is the worst lie of all spread by the Animal "Rights" Industry. Why would anyone invest about 4-5K in a dog and not send it to the track ? How do you think someone can say "he's not fast enough" without a race ? very strange that people can believe this. There are dogs that get injured and do not get registered and thus do not race. I've fostered several and had one through surgery for a broken leg. (Broke trying to climb a fence). No puppies are killed as you have been led to believe. I often wonder what kind of black hearted person could believe I would kill a puppy or would put up with someone that did. Maybe Spain, Maybe China. I don't know.
I do know every human that has touched my dogs and most of my friends dogs. Nothing like the internet facts you believe has ever happened around that rather large population of dogs.
I do appreciate your concern. I just pray you point it in the right direction. The Spanish dogs are called Galgo's. There are several rescue groups that help them. These groups could use your donations.
