A couple of years ago she asked me for a camera. I bought her a phone with a half way decent camera in it. She loved it and took some really great photos. Now she wants a 'real' camera that can make prints 8x10 and that she can change the settings. I was thinking a Nikon DL 24-500. She is twenty, National Honor Roll, and understands composition, settings etc.

What are your thoughts?

National Honor Roll? Heck get her a great camera. Get her a Pentax! They have a new K70 coming out.

That's a real nice camera for a compact. Unless she wants something she can build a system on, the DL 24-500 will pretty much do it all for her...

The new sony cyber-shot dsc-rx10 iii has a lens with 24-600mm and has great reviews for quality. Check these links for several reviews.

Twenty is a lot older than my granddaughters at 14 and 16. Both are on the smart student track at school and are creative with both photography and videography. They are teaching me that photography is changing (rapidly). I would not dare think I could pick out a camera for either of them. Get your granddaughter to tell you what interests her and how she intends to use it.

No, she doesn't want a big camera, She says maybe for a graduation present that would be nice :) Does she know how to set grand pa up??
She says just a better one than a phone camera that I can carry in my back pack and get good 8x10s

If she doesn't want to go as large as a bridge camera (I'd suggest a Panasonic Lumix), there are some good point and shoots out there with excellent pixel counts. I prefer the point and shoots that actually have a lens that retracts and allows for manual telephoto.

Give her a nice film camera, plus a film developing kit to get started. Obviously she is intelligent and dedicated to work; a camera which will challenge her and force her to learn to trust her instincts and capabilities would make the perfect gift.

Film photography is passe. Digital photography allows the photographer more control than does film photography. Both digital and film photography require knowing and using the same photographic skills.

I would highly recommend a Canon SL1. I love mine. It will allow her to do photos and video. If she has small hands, the SL1 is very comfortable to use, even with a large lens. Check out the Canon Online Store for a refurbished SL1. I bought one new about a year after they came out, and within the last year, I bought two more, both refurbished. One as a backup camera for myself and one as a gift for one of my kids. The refurbished SL1 works as well as the new one. If she would be more interested in a point and shoot, the Canon SX710 is pretty good. It has a great zoom, and shoots pretty sharp photos. The only missing about the SX710 is a viewfinder. Your Granddaughter could carry the SX710 with her all the time.

The specs look great, especially the 60 fps. Will you be consulting her about this first? The problem is there are too many choices.

If she lives nearby, take her to a camera store or investigate (with her) the possibilities at BHPhoto. She can also chat or phone them to discuss her requirements and possibilities. All you have to do is "pay
Grandpa"!!
Spending time with grandchildren is one of life's true joys.

If it were my grandchild, I would take her to my camera store, and let her play with different cameras, and choose the one, she's most comfortable with.....after all, you are creating memories with her, that will last a lifetime...
