I find trying to put together a audio visual show difficult to do.I have downloaded Windows Movie Maker (which is free)but still having problems with the fade ins. Can anyone suggest any other software, preferably free,to do the job of stringing together gathering of images, fades and adding music ? I have Windows 8 complete with Elements 10 & 12.

I like ProShow Gold. Lots of features, but, of course, you have to learn how to use them.

I have found that Windows Movie Maker is the simplest to use. You can change the length of time for the transitions (fade-in) if that is what you're trying to do. I have ProShow Gold, but there's a pretty steep learning curve with it.

Another vote for Jerry's suggestion. I also have ProShow Gold. Not free but it is easy to use, and has tons of features.

The link below may be interesting to look through for free slideshow software. One thing to look out for in free offerings is: how many different songs can you incorporate in the show? When I was first looking up slide show programs I found some packages that the free version would only allow you to use one song per show. You could use one song multiple times, but not multiple songs.

Like most members above, I am a firm believer in the ProShow software packages (I use ProShow Producer, a step up from Gold). It is excellent software, VERY versatile and user adaptable and has tons of templates for transitions and background frames for your pictures that you can tweak as necessary. Of course, anything that adaptable is also going to have a learning curve to get the full functionality of the software, but once you get the hang of it the end results are awesome.

I have used Pro Show for years. Excellent software, but there is a steep leaning curve.

I have Windows Movie Maker. All the things you need are there but you do have to learn it. It works very well for me .

I use Premiere Elements 14 paired with Photoshop Elements 14 and like it. However, several members in our camera club use ProShow Gold.

Yes WMM is an ok program but really doesn't work all that well. I have a video editor, two in fact, that also work well for still presentations with music, dissolves or other cross effects. It's by tracAxPC - Scottish I believe. An excellent editor. Not free but well worth every penny of the inexpensive price.

Another vote for ProShow Gold or Producer. Tons of features and very professional results.

On my Mac, I've often used iMovie and Graphic Converter.

You mention you have both PSE 10 and 12, but apparently you have tried both, and were not happy with the results. If you still have PSE 10, I would use it to produce your slide show. PSE 12's Slide Show Editor is inferior to those of earlier versions. It appears to me that Adobe is pushing the Elements' market to Premiere Elements to produce multi-media presentations.

That being said, there are a fairly large number of transitions in Movie Maker 2012. There is no Fade for that first image, however, if I am not mistaken.

Just create a black slide in your photo editor and dissolve from that to start the show...
