I need to know what telescope you will be using and what camera. I will configure Astrotortillia and send you a screen shot of the settings you will need for it to work, everytime.
I discovered a new "custom" script that shortened the solve time.
Steps to keep in mind before using Astortillia
Use either Cartes du Ciel or Stellarium - I have tested both and they work great
Pick a bright star in the SE, S, or SW....presently, I am using Vega.
1st using your planetary software and slew to Vega (for example) it may not be in the frame but who cares, take a picture and make sure you have stars, any stars, in focus. Astrotortillia cannot solve on unfocused stars.
Then boot up Astrotortilla
Connect your mount (it should report back "tracking" in small blue font.
Connect your imaging software - there are several to pick from BYEOS, APT, Nebulosity....and on.
Then select FILE, Load your "kit" file (provided you saved your scope-camera configuration for scale) - Astrotortilla wants to know your setup FOV. To find that info use this website and enter your camera and mount stuff.
For example - If I am using the VixenEd81s and the Atik393L then I will have a FOV of: 1.66 x 1.24 degrees _ I round down and up to be safe and would enter 1.70 x 1.20.
http://www.12dstring.me.uk/fov.htmNow this is REALLY important
Use a search radius of 45 degrees (give Astrotortillia some room to work) it takes a little longer that that's ok by me
Also enter this string in the CUSTOM setting:
--downsample 2 --overwrite --no-plots -N none -r --objs 100
Just copy and paste the above line in Custom Option copy everything the dashes are important.
Last and very important - make sure your camera takes an exposure that is long enough to show 1,000 plus stars. I start with 15 seconds with the DSLR and set the ISO to 3200 for example....if you are not getting a solve, change the search radius to 60 degrees and exposure to 20 or 30 seconds.....in some cases your image may be over exposed and come down...but this is what you change. Once your get your settings right and get a good solve. Save save save and give it a name, like
VixenEd81s+NikonD800e+4xBarlow (figure out what the FOV is for every combination of setup you have and save) enter the new FOV in Scale Maximun and Scale Maximum
so that you and reload it next time
This is an edit to original post - I have attached a screen shot of Astrotortillia using my NEWT and DSLR NikonD800e camera. Under ACTIONS on the right...make sure you check all three but you cannot enter anything there until you have used your planetary software to slew to the target.
Use JNOW or J2000 either one is ok, but make sure both your planetary software, mount, and Astrotortillia are the same....I use JNOW but it makes on difference.
Once you get a platesolve, say on VEGA, then you can pull out your Bahtinov mask and fine tune focus. From then on, where ever you choose to go using Stellarium or other, you can bet your life, Astrotortillia will have your target dead centered.
