My wife and I will be traveling to Nova Scotia next month. Does anyone have any favorite photo op sites or undiscovered, out-of-the-way gems? Also: is Prince Edward Island worth extending the trip? We'd love to hear about your experiences. Thanks.

Definitely do not miss the Cabot Trail. Beautiful scenery, but with not too many spots you can pull over to take pictures, so be prepared to take them out of your car window. There are designated parking areas, but they are few and far between. There is also on the Trail in the higher elevations, a quaking bog that is a good take in. I don't recall exactly what the name of the particular stop was on the road is, but, I am sure the local maps for the Trail will tell you.

By all means go to PEI. It's lovely and small enough to see a lot in a short time.

On PEI, stop at the "House of the Green Gables". Anne made it quite famous you know.

Peggy's Cove has a very scenic spot near the lighthouse. I was there on a rainy day and got some nice images. Prince Edward Island is well worth the trip-beautiful! Have a great time.

I suggest travelling the Trail in a clockwise direction to be on the inside (just in case your eyes forget to look at the road while looking at the spectacular scenery).

There is a HOG member (can't think of his name at the moment) that lives in Nova Scotia, perhaps he will chime in, I was in contact asking the same questions of him as we're planning a motorcycle trip there also. Safe and have a great trip.

Beware of rogue waves if it is stormy. Many people have been swept away over the years (as recently as about a month or so). But, yes, the photography opportunities are magnificent. If I am not mistaken, it is the most photographed lighthouse in N.A.

Follow the shore road east of Halifax either towards or from Cape Breton for some down home experiences and probably some of the best opportunities for photographs.

Mahone Bay (west of Halifax) is another great place. While there, you are a short distance from Lunenburg, home of the Bluenose schooner (on the reverse of the Canadian dime).

The Bay of Fundy is another place to visit. The bay is long and narrow causing the incoming tide to create a bore (wave) that can, at times, be quite spectacular!

I have family in N.S. and have been there many times.

Just remember to change your watches to the Atlantic Time Zone. When we went there we hadn't a clue that we were in another time zone. We went to Hopewell to see the Flower Pot Rocks (really interesting and photographic) and further up towards Moncton to see the Tidal Bore come up the river. We were told the time it would be there and we waited, and waited, and waited and...........nothing. A few years later I was looking at a time zone map and realized that the whole time we were there we hadn't a clue that we were an hour out of step with the rest of New Brunswick, ergo, we missed the Tidal Bore.

Photo opps galore ... a matter of personal preference though, depending on what type of scenery you like. I am a fan of old boats (old wooden boats that creak as they rock in the waves ... loads of character, and plenty of stories to tell if they could) and found lots of great little fishing villages all along our trip.

Peggy's Cove is iconic but tough to get any pictures without droves of people wandering around, especially if the weather is nice ... we were there on a cool drizzly day, and, fairly early in the morning so not too many people out yet (several tour buses pulled in just as we were leaving though). Lots of other scenery at Peggy's Cove as well (e.g., old boats :)) if you just park and wander. North shore (coast?) up around Digby was also great esp. if you like fresh scallops! (and old fishing boats). Excellent whale watching opportunities out of that area - we took a tour out from Brier Island which is a fun drive west from Digby along a long skinny peninsula (?) that I think is called the Digby Neck (or something like that) ... just have to time your drive to make sure you connect with the two ferries you need to catch along the way. If my arms had been about 6 ft. longer I could have given a big female humpback whale a little pat on the back off the stern of our boat.

We enjoyed the Cabot Trail but found it tough (as noted by another above) to stop for good photo opps. We were also on a bit of a tight schedule (had a lot to cover in only 1 week) which did not help. Next time I head out that way I think I would plan for a minimum of two weeks. I definitely want to see the bridge over to PEI, and want to also check out Newfoundland when I can.

Last but not least, if you are a fan of "east coast music" there are plenty of little pubs along the way all through Nova Scotia and Cape Breton Island, often with live music ... one of my main reasons for going out there, and all the photo opps were a welcome bonus :)

Cabot trail as suggested is nice but it is not in Nova Scotia, but in cape Breton. If u like old quiet , foggy fishing villages, with fishing gear, traps all over the place, Peggy's Cove is fabulous. Worth the detour from Halifax.

Extend the trip for sure, and while it's very popular and not "out of the way" be sure to go to Peggy's Cove. I could live on Cape Breton! Its beautiful.
