Aloha Robert, Was in the USAF over the same 20+ years and can remember only 3 different sets of Dog Tags. Still have them but my color is silver on all. Mahalo for your service.

The first ones, the ones with the notch, were left-over issue from prior generations! The Army used everything that they could until they got up to date material and supplies - example: I trained with an M14 and even carried one M14 with me on the ship (USNS Upshur) to SVN, issued an M16 shortly after we got in country ... and ... the supply of jungle boots ran really slow, we were issued WWII/Korea Era brown boots, the ones with the strap around the top, until supply caught up with demand ... !
All the tags are the same metal, some just had a flat finish.
Mahalo for your support!

I was on another site (has to do with 1911) earlier today and the talk turned to dog tags (only those with military ties will understand this) ... I finally put it together that during my time in service (1964 - 1985) I had four different style dog tag ... of course, this means nothing but, I thought I'd share anyroad ... ! Please don't flame me ... I grabbed a quick shoot with my ... uh! ... cell phone ...
I use to carry my Navy Dog Tags along with a P 38 until it opened and poked me in the leg.I put it away after that.
i still have mine and also the can opener.....mine are from 1954......and it has a service number not an ssn number...

I served late '67 to late '69. At some point during that time, my RA# was changed to my SSN#. I believe it was prior to Sept. 68 when I got shipped to Nam.
I still have mine from my little jungle safaris 1963-1965 (all expenses paid by Uncle Sam), but the most meaningful to me is my dad's. He died in his P38. I was only 18 mos. at the time so I have no memories of him, but I sure am glad he met my mom when he did!
I guess I am a prior generation. I was in Libia and then in Bad Tolz Germany in the occupation. We all had the notch.
PS That was when we too our pictures with 10 ASA and I got excited when it jumped all the way up to 25 ASA
Disclaimer: Yes, my SSN is on the dog tags picture that I posted but, as can be seen, I blocked the last four numbers.
The 'RA' number is my Army serial number ... it has no other meaning, is not traceable in any way, and was changed to the SSN effective 01 July 1969 ... !
The serial number has no meaning now ... it's just something that service members will always remember (could not get out of the gas chamber without singing it out) ... Patton's is O-2605; Elvis' is US 53 310 761 ...
About the only use I had for a serial number was tracing WWII records for family members ... it makes it easier to locate records, but is really not required.
