Photography Week Magazine

I've become a bit of a Flickr addict, for reasons that don't bear discussion here. One of my images got a response from Photography Week, a digital subscription magazine: they want my image to appear in an issue of their magazine. They say they will "fully credit you and put a link back to your website," which is my flickr page.

Do any of you hogs know anything about this rag? Are they reputable? What will happen to my copyright if they publish the image? Anything else I should be looking out for?

Thanks in advance.

You need to decide how important it is to you to be published.

It used to be that when a photographer got published they got paid. Since so many people have digital cameras and everyone seems to be eager to get published it's gotten to where magazines rely on that desire to save money. If they can get the photo from you for free then they don't have to pay anyone else.

So I guess the question is how much do you believe that your photography is worth? Is it worth getting paid for or do you have to give it away? because if you give images away now, it's going to be harder for everyone to get paid later.

To be paid or not to be paid is not the question!

The question is to let it lie hidden on some server or to let others enjoy it.

The magazine charges money for subscriptions. What are you getting other than Thanks You for your photo. Is that OK for you?

If this thing is on the level I'd consider charging them for the photo's use because if the magazine is worth its salt it will be seen by perhaps many, many thousands around the country. But if you just want the exposure then...

Unless you specifically sign it away, you always retain ownership of the image. Do check to see if giving them permission to use your image allows them to distribute it to others, just so you know.

Well put. Photographers should receive compensation for their photographic product. Period.

Wrong answer. Photographers should receive compensation for their photographic work.

That kind of question answers itself. Ask for a nominal amount, like $100 for limited use only of your photograph. Keep all copyright in your photograph. Stick to your guns. Do not argue. Ask where to send your invoice. Include a simple written statement granting only one-time use of your photograph. Require that an authorized individual sign and return the statement to you to seal the agreement. If the magazine refuses to pay, then simply say thank you for your consideration, and then exit.

Asking to use your photograph without compensation while the magazine profits from your work equates to an insult to you. This kind of business model borders on the criminal. Do not feed this business model.
