I know it can be done but I can't find the procedure one must use to get it done. I have pourchased the targets or test charts but they don't come with instructions. I would like to do it for myself because I read that when you send it into a vender they might take to many shortcuts, resulting in less then complete accuracy. I use a Canon 5d mark 1 and I have several L series lenses. Please help.

Lens Calibration, and Micro-adjustment, which is what I believe you are thinking of, are two different procedures. There are many fine tutorials and how-to's on the internet about doing the Micro-Adjustment on cameras that support it. I suggest that Google is your friend.

Lens Calibration involves sending the lens to a factory-authorized center where the actual glass elements are aligned to the lens in a far more precise manner than is usually done in the factory. Also, the lens is calibrated to the exact camera it will be mounted on, and when mounted on a different camera, may no longer be aligned as well.

The way I understad it is that there is a way you can take a picture of a target with auto focus turned on and if the pic is slightly out of focus you can callibrate the focus in the camera to correct proper auto focus. I read somewhere that you need to do this everytime you get a new lens. Once you make the adjustments to the camera it remembers the setting for that lens from know on. And I agree most people send them in for this adjustment.

ClickTime, if you can tell us what DSLR you own, we can confirm whether or not it has M/A capability. And just to reiterate, do not confuse CALIBRATION with MICRO-ADJUSTMENT. They are, as I stated, two very different techniques. YOU can do micro-adjustment, the factory service techs have to do calibration.

I have a canon EOS 50D and a 5D MKII, both cameras have the lens micro adjustment feature to correct backfocus or frontfocus problems with your lens.

It also has another function to correct focus if the particular camera has problems with autofocus of all your lenses.

The functions are found in the custom function menu, the orange colored one with the camera icon, and the settings are found under the C. Fn III: Autofocus/Drive sub-menu.

Once you have navigated to that, at the bottom of the panel are a set of numbers 1-8 and under those numbers are other numbers indicating the current setting of the Custom Function.

The custom function for fine tuning you lens(es) is:
C. Fn III-08.

A good tutorial on frontfocus/backfocus issues can be found
on the Adorama photosupply site in this video:

Hope this helps.

If you need more info a Google search will
bring up a lot of stuff on the issue. Also the archives of some of the digital photo magazines have a wealth of information on the subject.

As I said earler I have a 5D clasic there is no custom function that states micro focus ajdustment. There are no sub catagories that state it ither. I guess the ajdustment is not possible in my camera by the user. It is really hard to find info on the 5d clasic since the mk2 came out. I have updated the firmware to the latest version and checked on Canons web site without any new results. They don't really support my camera any more. I can't even get a new driver to teather it to a windows 7 machine with 64 bit. So my laptop is out. I think it is time for the 5dMK2 or a 1DM3 but that might have to wait. I hear there is a 5DMK3 coming soon. Maybe my wife will be nice to me at Christmas. I'll start working on her now.

Yeah, I don't think the 5D Mark I has Micro Adjust. But if you wanna get rid of that antique, let me know. I hear Full Frame singing my song... :)
