I absolutely agree that ICloud is an excellent way to share photos between Apple devices, and it also serves as a backup if your phone is damaged/stolen or if a password is forgotten and you have to restore your Iphone or IPad ( both of these things have happened to members of my family and the restore was seamless). My daughter-in-law is a prolific user of her IPhone camera to record our grandchildren, and we get a steady stream of the photos appearing on not only our iPhones and IPads, but as the screensaver of our Apple TV is well. The cost is minimal - free up to a certain amount and the 99 cents/month up to 50 GB. The only reason I don't currently use it on my IMac, which I use for PP, is that transferring via USB allows me to choose which photos I import rather than getting all the photos automatically and then having to delete unwanted ones. iCloud is highly recommended.

Yes, thanks. I'm going to have to make sure I have that set up correctly.

Hi Jeff,
I have used the "AirDrop process to wirelessly transfer photos from my iPhone 6 to my iMac. Position yourself near you iMac or other Mac computer. Open the Photos folder where your iPhone images are saved. Touch the first photo you was to transfer then look for the icon in the lower right corner with the box that has an arrow pointed upward. Click on the icon and you should see the photo you selected and a row of recent photos. Select the remainder of the photos. Just below the line of photos you will see "Tap to share with AirDrop. In my box there is an 8-ball icon and below it my name and iMac. When I tap the 8-ball, the transfer process begins as a blue line circles the 8-ball icon. The photos are quickly loaded to your Downloads folder. From there you can move them to a more permanent location. Hope this wan't too confusing. Let me know if you have any questions. Sincerely,
Lee

Pretty cool. I'll have to try that. The only downside I see is the extra step to relocate the desired photos.

Thanks to all for your help and suggestions. You've certainly collectively provided a lot of options and approaches to try.
Thank you again.

Here is a simple free app I use.
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/wifi-photo-transfer/id380326191?mt=8

When on the same network ...
1. simply tap iOS app WiFiPhoto and view the URL
2. enter the URL from the iPhone app on your Mac browser
3. you will see Camera Roll - open Camera Roll and select photos
4. you can wirelessly load one (jpeg) or multiple photos (via zip file) to the Mac

I use a home page bookmark browser app called 43Marks.com so when I open Chrome it opens that homepage and I then launch the URL.

You seem to be a bit confused by the process. You don't export files from the iPhone to the Mac you import files from the iPhone to the mac. Think of it as a point of view problem. The process is controlled by the Mac not the iPhone. Just press the import button when Photos come up. Once Photos has them then you can export them to any place you want with the File/Export menu command.

I'm a recent convert to the iMac world, but remain confused about the best way to import any photos I've taken with my iPhone onto the Mac. When I connect the two with a USB cable, Photos pops up. I select the photos I wish to export to the Mac, go to File/Export and then I have an option of either "Export nn photos" or "Export Unmodified Original ...". If I take the first option, I have a choice of format - JPEG, TIFF or PNG. The TIFF files are huge (24MB) and, closeup, don't seem to be noticeably more clear than the JPEGs. If I chose the Unmodified Original option, I don't have a choice of format -- it's just JPEG, with a file size around 2MB. Is one of these methods superior to another (a) if I want to do further post processing, or (b) I don't? The "Unmodified Original" sounds like what I should use, but perhaps the title is misleading.
Any insights you can provide would be most appreciated.
Thanks in advance for your help.

I use an App called Photo Sync. I have it installed on my PC, Macbook pro, iPhone, iPod touch and 2 iPads. This is very easy to use.

It is a bit confusing, but what I am learning is it depends on which device (iPhone or Mac) is controlling the process as to whether you are importing or exporting. Thanks for your help.

I hooked my iPhone 5c to the MacBookPro running OSX Lion (10.7+) via USB. No phone icon on desktop, only iPhoto (former version Photo) could see any iPhone pictures. Could transfer, but iPhoto saves the image files in a system reserved folder. So I was not able to check the individual files in Info or import them into Photoshop. I have been a Mac user since the SE in 1985 and am dismayed with the route Mac OSs have taken.

There is an almost hidden button in the lower left corner of Image Capture that allows you to set the application that opens when you connect your iPhone to the Mac. If you're like me, and just want files to go into folders somewhere, choose Image Capture as that app. I sometimes set it to Lightroom, but not Photos.

See my last post... It's your solution. Image Capture is free with your Mac and it is part of every system since before your OS was released. It's in the Applications folder.

I suppose I have become accostumed to seeing an USB connected device to appear as an icon on the desktop which acts like a folder - click on it and see what is inside. It is things like that had made to Mac intuitive - see icon, click icon. As Image Capture is an application it can be parked in the dock and icons should be draggable to it for opening whatever can be capturable. But one has to have an icon first. I'll try out the technique next opportunity.

I keep it in the dock. You can register specific devices so that when you connect them, they automatically start Image Capture.
