The best thing the People of the United States can do for those in the Service is to ensure that they are not sent to fight a war without a clear mission, objective, and cause for which can see an end game. Being overseas and fighting a fight in which these things are lacking is a fruitless exercise, a waste of money and lives (ours and the enemy) and degrades our society. It leads to endless war. But it is our current situation.

Find your own soapbox instead of crapping on this thread and certainly not the intent the OP was conveying.

I am speaking as one who has served (honorably, commissioned) overseas and speak from experience. I stand by my remarks.

I also am speaking as one who has served honorably and overseas and speak from experience. My remark was that you should perhaps start your own thread as opposed to polluting someone else's with your rhetoric, right or wrong. People other than you have their rights as well.
Fifty years ago, our soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines were sent to a war run by congress and civilians who had no idea of what a war was. They appeared to think that there should be "fair play rules" but the other side played by no rules. A segment of our population blamed our troops for everything that was bad about war. When these troops came back, they were heckled, spat on and had dog poop rubbed on their chest. I think that we, as a country, learned something from that. The spit on my chest was not in vain.
It appears that our service men and women are receiving the respect they deserve. It doesn't matter if they were in combat or just ready to go to combat. They have signed a contract to protect the freedom of our country knowing full well that they may have to pay with their life.
Their families realize that there sons and/or daughters may not come home. As for me, I would rather go back to combat myself than to send my son or daughter. The family and friends of service men and women get my respect also.
From the bottom of my heart I want to thank each and every service man and woman and all their families and friends.

Thank you from this Korea-Viet Nam vet.
It was pretty brutal in San Fran when we left in '66. The love generation turned into the hate generation! Thank God for our men and women who have fought and died in all wars to protect our freedom we have today. My whole family has been in the service from as far back as I can remember. Fortunately, they all came home alive. I was fortunate that I had enlisted in the USAF, but saw the bodies coming back from '63 and on. It was so bad in '65, we had a temporary morgue set up on the flight line. Travis AFB, '62-'66
The folks at home were more valuable than anyone can imagine.
