While Memorial Day will be filled with cookouts and family fun it is very important to remember what this holiday is all about. This is the day we honor the men and women who have fought for this country. They are the reason we have the freedom and liberties we enjoy. From the revolutionary war, through Iraq and Afghanistan many have given their lives for this great country and deserve our thanks. So, bow your heads and pray for all the men and women who have served our country. Say a prayer that God will bless them and welcome them into his arms. There are many in this blog that have served this country from WW 2, Korea , Vietnam, I want to thank those men and women for their service and sacrifice. We all salute you and honor you on this day.

Actually it is the day we honor all those who died serving. Veteran's day in Nov is for those of us who served and made it back alive.
Here at my house there are two of us, I did 3 years active duty and 2 years in Vietnam, my oldest son who just left to visit a friend did 6 years active, now reserves, and one tour in Iraq as a combat engineer with the 1st Cav.
I came within 30 seconds of this being my holiday. I was packing my stuff to go on a week's outpost duty guarding a mountain pass when our section draftsman/cartographer walked in and said he wanted to go so he could see if they followed his blue prints for the new bunkers. (And up until then it was a week of guard at night and all day off. Sort of a mini vacation.) I was told to get my stuff back out and go back to work, Mac was going. Two days later was Tet, and the bunker he commanded was the first hit by a VC Sapper platoon, George was killed.

For those who gave the ultimate sacrifice in serving our great nation, I salute you.
saluting ALL the people who gave their all in all wars.
Right now, it's difficult to see my computer's screen because of the tears welling after reading the comments on this thread. They are great, and I do now that many of you have honorably served our country, and are responsible for our freedom and well being, instead of "those" trying to tear us down, you have kept us strong. I love and cherish you all.
Three brothers in my family. All came through it alive. 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's. Proud to have served. Monday will be the day we honor those that gave their lives. Our country is great because of them. No thanks big enough. Respect for them, their families, flag and country is immeasurable.

In 2013 I visited the War Cemetery for American service personal who died in Europe, UK, and the North Atlantic in WW2. The land was given by Cambridge University on behalf of the British people and it is maintained by US and British personnel. The cemetery is emotional to visit. It is beautifully kept and cherished, a party of school children visited while my family and I were there. No shouting or horseplay, just quiet murmurings and good behaviour. I have attached a panorama; on the right is a long wall covered with the names of those who have no known grave. If you ever get the chance please visit. Click download to view.
I would like to clearly state that Memorial Day is ONLY for those that have fallen in battle, not for the rest of us who served and lived, that's what Veterns Day is for.

Today I'm speechless and saddened by those that gave the ultimate sacrifice. Many of whom were good friends of mine. God please them all and may they never, never be forgotten. I know I haven't.

As a vet of 12 years service in the Army and Air Force I, like so many others, work hard to remember those who went before and the results of what they did - our freedom. It's an important day to me and should be to the entire country. Thanks for bringing the subject up.
I have been to the UK three times. One thing that really impresses me is that in nearly every town, there is a war memorial. They really remember their war dead in the UK.
