How fast/slow is your Lightroom ?

My raw files are approx 31 to 32 megs.

Import into Lightroom and let it build 1:1 previews on import.
30 files takes 5 or 6 minutes with auto tone on.

In the development module, moving from image to image takes approx 7 to 8 seconds,
before I can actually work on the image.

What you say : slow, average, fast ?

Sounds like you may want to increase your RAM.

I was going to ask that question. How much ram do you have and what processor are you using? Another way to speed up this process is moving to an SSD Drive.

My raw files are 24mb, moving from image to image in develop module is almost instant (~1/4 second).
I have 16gb RAM.

Very slow, but then I use a quad core processor and 16 Gig of RAM.

Whew ... looks like mine is really slow. Thought I had a fairly fast computer.

I think switching to an SSD might do more for you than anything else. The best are Intel's but can be a little pricy. Minimum 512Gb.

Most everything in LR is instantaneous here. The SSD and processor are the two main components, the ram doesn't seem to get used so much when the SSD and processor are up to task. With the spinner disks, ram plays a very large role. In this case; 2-250GB SSD's in raid0 (this is like a double AA/Fuel dragster), i7-4770 processor, and 16 GB ram which does not get much of a work out. Will run some tests on the uploads and post back.

After all of that, I will state there to be a 1 second lag in rendering while using two screens (the second is color managed adobeRGB) while working in the develop module.

For LR to copy 36 images (997 MB total) from an SD card out of a Nikon D7200, on usb 3.0 was 13.71 seconds.

Wow ... is that building 1:1 previews ?

I opened the task manager dialog ... along with Lightroom to see the cpu usage.

When moving from image to image in development module, cpu goes from 80% to 100%.
Once image is loaded it drops back down to 0%.

Thanks for your input.

How many background programs or apps do you have active? Shut some of those unnecessary apps off and see if you get better performance. Stuff like Apple or Google search, etc. I used to struggle with that, so I upgraded to Windows 10, which helped, then upgraded the whole PC when Micro Center had a sale!
How old is your PC? You have plenty of RAM, but it also may be the bus speed on your motherboard, which might make the CPU overload to 100%. Mine was 5+ years old with a dual core processor. Then I discovered thru internet research that my PC could only run so fast because of motherboard limitations, regardless of how much RAM I added.

this website seems to indicate your running an older, slower CPU. keep scrolling, it's way down near the bottom. http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_lookup.php?cpu=Intel+Xeon+E5520+%40+2.27GHz

I recently began using a newer Windows 10 laptop with nothing extra on it except LR and Elements and my photos. It is almost, but not quite as slow as my 6 yr old with Windows Pro 7 with loads of extra software and thousands of photos. It still seems very slow, both with raw and jpeg. Most are jpeg. However, it only takes about 3 seconds to move from image to image in development mode. I have wondered why it is so slow. I am currently using LR 6.
Elements seems faster to me.

Thanks for the info.

I do not know about 1:1 previews. I did go through the preferences to see what you are talking about and saw nothing about that. There are image icons in the windows folders, if that is what your are speaking of. Are you using your GPU to assist?
