Having a non-usa version is not necessarily a prescription for doom and gloom. You save a few bucks and take your chance. It can be serviced, including under warranty, but you might have to send it out-of-country for that to happen. If you feel lucky and don't hammer your gear, it might work for you. For me, usa is worth the extra, but for you, perhaps not. Best of luck!

Having a USA version is no different from any other genuine Nikon lens supplied anywhere in the world.

With all do respect for the difference of $20.00 I will go all day for the Nikon backed US warranty. I agree there is no difference between the US vs Non US. However if it ever fails after 1,10, or even 20 years, the assurance that Nikon will service it is certainly worth the minor cost difference. I have thought about buying grey market but it would be my luck I got the one that failed a year or two down the line. The difference in price between grey and US is not that much. Your buying a pro quality lens that will probably last you a lifetime and spending a little more to ensure it can always be repaired by Nikon is worth that extra cost.. I also highly recommend B&H or Adorama when buying your Nikon gear as they are an authorized dealer of Nikon where Abes of Maine is not. Just saying......

I agree, for $20 I would go with the USA warranty. I believe that if you register a USA lens with Nikon, they still extend the warranty to 5 years.

As far as after warranty service, it really shouldn't matter. I used to live/work close enough to Nikon in Melville that I would stop in to their service department if I needed something. Repairs were done in house, occasionally same day.

Over the past year I sent two lenses to Nikon for out of warranty repair. They outsourced both repairs even though I specifically asked that the second one be done in house. They don't indicate on their paperwork that they outsource it, but UPS tracking shows where it was shipped from. It was a repair facility that handles all major brands.
