Computer doesn't recognize my camera

Never thought I'd want to use the Wi-Fi function on my Canon 70D, but have a need to set up a tethered shoot. I'm using a Windows 7 computer and it won't recognize the 70D. Tried everything I can think of (don't go there), running the wi-fi function on the camera, and turning off my firewall. There must be something I'm not doing correctly. Is there an update list for camera models I need to access, or anything else I'm not aware of? Maybe I need to be walked through the process, but I've watched tutorials on the subject, followed them, and no results. Can't run a wired tethered operation either because the computer doesn't recognize the camera.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. djt....the tech challenged dummy.

Are you using EOS utility 2.14? You don't mention it. EOS utility 3.0 was not compatible (full frame only); don't know if they've updated it yet.
Are you using Windows 7 Starter Edition? That's not compatible with EOS Utility.

I have Windows Premium, but was not using EOS utilities at all. Where does that fit into the equation? Might be my entire problem. Probably have 2.14 because it would have been downloadeed from the disk that came with the camera.

If your computer has an SD card reader, consider using it ...

If your computer does NOT have an SD card reader then you can buy an SD card reader which will plug into any USB port ... the style & cost varies ... the price starts at under $1.00 directly from China (free postage ... it takes 10+ days for small items to arrive from China) through eBay OR for whatever the seller (foreign or domestic) can wrest from you ...

The card reader is ALSO another good alternative for people who don't want to use the camera-to-computer cable.

BTW. If your only USB ports are on the rear of the computer (if you are using a desktop computer), then you can attach a cable with the appropopriate male-female USB connectors on it for easier access.

I do have a card reader and that's all I've been using. Surprise....when I tried to use the cable the computer doesn't 'discover' the camera. THAT'S the problem...I think.

Ummm.......How does an SD Card Reader help him with wireless tethering?

*Sorry djt, apparently we were both typing at the same time.

At the time that I had my 70D I was running Windows Vista or XP. Don't remember. Had no problem with the computer recognizing the camera but you need to use the Canon utility on the disk that came with the camera.

That's OK. Use of Canon Utilities doesn't factor in either. Can't talk to the computer.

You use EOS Utility 2.14 to tether wirelessly to the camera. Start WiFi on the camera, use EOS Utility 2.14 to connect.

INDEED!!

It doesn't ...

.....BUT, IMO, your question is almost like asking "How is a prime lens better than a zoom lens?"

If the OP really needs to use the camera's WIFI function, then I think he needs to see if it will function on a computer with a more recent OS (or, another computer with WIN7) ...

That is, isolate the problem ...

.....I guess that I'm too dense to see why he now has a need other than to possibly broadcast to multiple users ...

FWIW. I think that the OP can contact CANON's customer service to see if they can remedy the problem OR clarify why his camera isn't able to communicate with his computer as it is configured.

While I confess I'm more familiar with Nikon than Canon, I have done tethering before, and it has always taken both the capability of the camera to tether AND an interface program on the computer. In reading your posts, I'm not able to determine if you are using an interface app on your computer or what that app may be. It would probably help everyone if you could tell us what, if any, software you are using on your computer and what steps you have taken to get the camera to talk to your computer.

OK guys. Please cut it out. And I want to use a tethered computer....for my own reasons. No need to explain that to anyone. Thanks everyone for your ideas. Hoped to be able to solve this problem here ( haven't given up yet), before I contact Canon cust svs.
I am experiencing thunder storms in the area; therefore, I don't plan to stay connected very long.

I ourlined the steps I've taken so far, but now I'm asked to start up my "pairing" program, installed on the computer. Presently researching that. djt

That sounds like the EOS 2.14 utility that jcboy3 and LFingar have referred to. Sounds like you may need to verify that's on your computer.
