Going to my grandson's birthday party this saturday. He will be 5 years old. Going to take my DSLR. What do you think the odds are that I will be the only one with a camera? Everyone else will be using a smartphone. Just a thought.

Then everyone will have the same "snapshot" pictures, except you. You will have photos.

Been there but my daughters father in law and I are both dslr nuts and we are always the only ones equipped to shoot high quality shots at our grand children's parties. Yup, everyone else uses their smart phones and when most of them show me their shots, I say to myself what a poor quality shot you got. I think a majority of novices really don't know anything about composition or tweaking their phone camera shots after looking at them. We are proud of most of our dslr shots and print the keepers.

This actually ties in with another thread on todays discussion board. Keep in mind, there are two things smart phone cameras do very, very well. They take pictures that are more than adequate for viewing on a computer or another phone, and they can instantly upload those pictures to social media for all the friends, family and neighbors to see. For many today, social media has become the photo album that some of us remember back before the internet. If you think back to, say, the '70's, it will probably be about the same thing as the one guy with a 35mm camera in a sea of people with Kodak Instamatics.

I'm sure you can. I am referring to people who know nothing about photography.

Quality is crystal clear on a lot of phones

I agree. Several weeks in the past, someone posted a Ford Thunderbird photo on this forum with a smartphone. Had he not stated he used a smartphone, you would have thought he used a DSLR. It was not the first generation Thunderbird.

My last three new topics disappeared; comments appear reliably. Mystery not solved.

Last December I posted this observation:

A local conservation group holds an annual juried photography contest with cash prizes and the winning photo is featured on the group's calendar. Many entries are received representing all levels of experience, equipment and expertise.

The winning photo this year was a landscape shot with an iphone.

One shouldn't think that just because they're wielding a DSLR, they're a better photographer.

I don't think anyone said that just because they have a DSLR that they are better photographers. Typically, a calendar photo is only enlarged to 8x10 max and that is certainly within the abilities of most camera phones and point and shoots. I have seen some really questionable DSLR photographers and some very good Point and Shoot and Camera phone images. I think we are comparing apples and oranges when we go down that road. Joe McNally is a very accomplished photographer and he primarily uses DSLR and large format cameras. But, when the situation calls for it, he also uses his camera phone or a point and shoot. That doesn't make him any less of a photographer, it just means that he chooses his tools based on the requirements. He wouldn't shoot a wedding or a magazine fashion shoot with a camera phone and he would shoot underwater with a Speed Graphic (unless he had a waterproof case). For general photography, if you are going to enlarge the photos or crop 10% out of the middle or one of the edges of the photo (I often can get 3 or 4 photos out of one image that was shot with an 18-70 or a 70-300mm lens because of resolution) you can NOT expect to get those results with a point and shoot or a camera phone given the size and resolution of the sensor. A 24 megapixel sensor the size of a small pinky fingernail is much different than the 24megapixel sensor on a 35mm full frame camera. I am not belittling either, just saying that they are not going to produce the same quality of work at medium to larger sizes (11x14 or larger images) They look great on a monitor or small prints 8x10 and smaller.

What a coincidence. I remembered that photo because someone use to own a similar Thunderbird in my neighborhood. Haven't seen it in awhile. Probably moved away or sold it.

I remember, before the advent of Digital Cameras or Cellphones, attending several weddings and when the guests arrived at the reception, they found there were a couple of Disposable Cameras on each table along with a note asking the guests to use them as they wished and then leave them on the table. After the reception was over, the cameras were all collected and the film was developed and printed. The happy couple ended up with several hundred photos, most of which were pure junk, but there were usually a dozen or so that were presentable and almost always, one or two were real gems. ..........
