My Water Collection

This series is a morning outing to get 2 x 1000 lt. food containers we'll use to collect water. We can store enough rain water for household use to last 5 months without rain. These tanks are to back up a 10,000 lt. tank by my shed for use on the vegie patch. When the big tank goes dry I'll go to a water stand, fill a tank, bring it back and siphon one into the other for garden use.

These shots were at a roundabout, in the housing estste, waiting for our guide to the tanks.

Watch the water, I have a couple of 1000 litre tanks unfortunately mine seem to have some tiny worms inside, fine for the garden but not for drinking.

Thanks everyone for looking and commenting. Water is a bit of work for us but we're used to it. We've been on rainwater since 1991. If the house tanks go dry we have to buy a load town water... expensive and it has a dreadful taste.

What do you do to ensure its clean and safe? When i first set up my tanks the water was clean and better than the mains supply. Now not so good. still there is enough head on it for keeping the garden watered. Initially it looked like water was going to be metered but now its all suspended since the last election.

Thanks for the comments all, appreciated.

blackest, the only maintenance I do is to check that the mesh filter into the tank keeps birds, snakes and rodents out, they drown. Any standing water in the down pipes is drained after two weeks of no rain, if it stands longer it starts to go foul. The system has four down pipes that that feed into plumbing under the house with a drain cap at the low point. The tanks are above ground and the water stays cool. We filter drinking water with a basic Britta water filter. Coffee and cooking water are unfiltered.
