Tell me if this means after July 2016 that we will have to pay for upgrades to the OS!
This link will take you to the article I just read about WIN 10

I read that differently. What I think it says, and I could be wrong, is that the free upgrades from Win 7, Vista, etc will go away and it will cost $119 to upgrade from the older versions of Windows.
I don't read this as talking about updates to Win 10 itself. Hope I'm right :)

Yep, always have, always will ;)

You did not think that the OS would be free forever did you? BTW - Apple has been giving their OS away free each upgrade for several years now. Gotta love that ;)

You mean we are going to have to pony up $119.00 for this OS when it was touted as a free up grade. If MS thinks that I will be going to a MAC?

Touted as a free upgrade for a LIMITED time.... It was never a secret.

Edit: Of course if you already have the upgrade to 10 it WAS free... they will not charge you for it... but for the next upgrade, you pay the piper, and for those who miss the free window, they have to pay to play.

You do understand that if you already have the free upgrade, they are not charging you to keep it.... it is yours. Future upgrades WILL cost you though.

BUT FWIW - I switched from Windows to Linux some years back, and then from Linux to Mac - never been happier than with OS X. :) All computers and smart devices in my household have been Apple - no problems with them.

I still think you guys are reading this wrong, The $119 is for your first copy of Win 10 after July 29, 2016.
Here is what How-to-Geek said in an article from July 2015:

"Windows 10 will be updated and developed on an ongoing basis going forward. Microsoft won’t work for three years on a Windows 11 with new features and attempt to sell you an upgrade. Instead, they’ll continue adding features and improvements to Windows 10 itself on an ongoing basis. You won’t have to pay for these features. Windows 10 will just receive regular updates with the features that would otherwise have been held onto for Windows 11."

I am not confused, I agree with you - the FREE upgrade was for a limited time, always was. Windows 10 was always to be a paid upgrade AFTER the initial free upgrade period.

Edit: And as was said earlier, there is a difference between UPGRADE and UPDATE, an UPGRADE is a completely new version, like version 1.0 and version 2.0, an UPDATE might go from version 1.0 to 1.1

The upgrade to Windows 10 from earlier versions is free until July as stated. What they are talking about is an additional upgrade for those of us that already have Windows 10 and that will be free for a limited time as well. If you build a new computer and need to install Windows 10 that will cost you ~$110. They are following the same track as Apple here. When you purchase a new branded computer (Apple or PC) your OS is already installed and it's cost is built into the system.

Yes, that's exactly how I read it. Also, if you follow the line on that line of the article (to this http://www.engadget.com/2016/05/17/windows-10-update-will-double-number-of-start-menu-ad), that exactly what that article says as well.

And that's exactly what Microsoft has been saying: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10-win_upgrade/future-windows-10-updates/aa5220f5-f2c1-4e94-881f-6cacc4e1b1eb?auth=1

This is more than a one-time upgrade: once a Windows device is upgraded to Windows 10, we will continue to keep it current for the supported lifetime of the device – at no additional charge. With Windows 10, the experience will evolve and get even better over time. We’ll deliver new features when they’re ready, not waiting for the next major release.

Thanks to All UHH members who chimed in on this subject, thanks for clearing up the muddy waters. I won't need to change my OS after all. Hal
