Double-crested Cormorant - a first for me

Caught this guy on our farm pond. I've seen cormorants during our travels but never here in Illinois. He was very skittish. I snuck up on him and only caught a few photos with strong backlighting before he took off. My new D500 is said to focus great on BIF, but with my 200-500 it is the equivalent of a 750mm. I'm having some problems keeping focus points on the target.

The first photo (with the stump) looks great in the download and I like it best for the setting for the bird.

Nice job! The combo your using is working well for me. The AF-C and D25 seem to work quickly and well. That and more practice!

In the first shot it almost looks like he is trying to blend in with the stump and use it for camouflage. Good catch!

If the Focus Points are distracting you, try using few of them - 9 perhaps. Personally, I use one.
