Suggestion to admin

Yep. That's what I was thinking about. No hard limit on the text box, but a warning that would prevent the post from being submitted.

Although it would probably create some problems with less tech savvy users.

I'll also probably increase the limit to 10000 characters. Or maybe 15000. So hopefully we won't run into too many instances of this happening.

But there is always someone who would push it no matter what.

Old software didn't have a limit. And the longest post currently still in the database has 329859 characters. I have no idea what can possibly be posted there. I'm afraid to open it as it would probably crash the server.

Simple layout fixes...

please note the body text isn't supposed to be underlined...I forgot to click off of the text before doing the screen shot.

That won't conserve vertical space. There is still a lot of empty background to the right of the avatar. So this approach wouldn't be solving the problem.

And at the same time, it presents a new problem.

What happens when an avatar is a wide image? Wider than the box you have in your mockup.
It would be resized to the proper width, and then the height would get reduced to maintain aspect ratio. So the image would only be 2-3 lines tall.

And the small text, lines 4 and 5 would start at the new line below the text. That would look really bad and even more confusing. Imagine lines "Posts" and "Location" on the next line below the avatar, not to the right of it.

The only reliable way I can think of for keeping the text aligned in such situation is to either use floating divs with margins or tables. Both of those solutions create their own problems.

Additionally, for users that don't upload an avatar, it would actually waste vertical space.

But I'm still working on it. This is not final. So if I come up with a better solution, I'll make the changes.

In any case, thanks for the suggestion.

As for larger user names, I'll add a custom view setting for that in the near future.

No problem, as a designer, one of my biggest peeves is not having things aligned. It just makes things easier to read when they are. That was basically my point with my post. Currently items are left, right, and centered, and my eyes have to jump all over the place read the site.

Post's timestamp would be better on the left. But it also contains # link, which is a link directly to the post.
If placed on the left, it would be too close to the Reply link of the post above.

If you are quoting a post that has more than 4000 characters, then the quote is discarded.
This is done to free up some space in the text box. Otherwise, the quoted text would take up the entire text box character limit and you wouldn't be able to enter the response.

I'll think of a more elegant solution. But for now, the quote is simply discarded for posts with more than 4000 characters. As if you clicked Reply instead of Quote Reply.

But thanks for letting me know. Trying to edit out a portion of a quoted text for a long post is a valid use-case. So I'll need to think about handling it.
There is a limit of 5000 characters per post. br ... (show quote)

Thank you for engaging in the discussion. I hope it is as productive as I had intended.

There are many sites that impose a character / word limit on any post and provide real time feedback. That is a very useful mechanism which both constrains lengthy posts, and allows people to self edit while encouraging some degree of brevity.

I don't know if the software supports that or not, but it could be one option to address both problems and objectives.

Good luck!

Well said, Sir! Hopefully the discussion will continue in a constructive and useful manner. My main peeve is the layout and usability (UX design), the changes of functionality and policy may also have issues (or not) but they seem less immediate or apparent.

Thanks

I agree,.. The poster's name could be larger. I'd also like to see the number of posts a member has made under their name. It would make it easier to see.

While giving the new format some time before I decide what I like and not, I just can not get past not having the link at the bottom of the page to take me back to that section, like the one at the top of the page. I really liked that when I got to the end of reading a thread, I could click back to the section. Now I have to scroll all the way back to the top to do that.

The new format works fairly well (for reading) on my phone, but doesn't seem to be as easy to navigate.

The link at the bottom was hard-coded to Main (and Introduce Yourself). So it made no sense in other sections.
I like the idea of including a link to the section at the bottom, but with some sections the title of the link would be too long.

For instance, on "this" page that we are on right now, at the top, just above "suggestion to Admin" is the "Main photography discussion" link. Having the same link at the bottom saves "a LOT" of scrolling back to the top of the page to get to it.
