Photograph or Illusion

I believe so-called "photographs" that were created in someone's mind and then brought to life by a digital processing program are not photographs but creative artwork.

"A picture is worth a thousand words" no longer applies. A picture or photograph is now a thousand illusions often created by very gifted magicians.

I praise both artists and photographers, but I personally prefer to keep it in the realm of reality.
Amen

I tend to think of untouched photographs as documentation. They can be either utilitarian or beautiful depending on the subject. A well-conceived image with beauty, carefully created, that inspires the soul or expresses something from within the creator is art.

And here we go ... 1,2,3 ....

Approximate quote: "The goal of a photograph is to create the illusion of reality". --A Adams. I can look up the exact words this evening if anyone requests.

I possess so little art that I first strive for the "realm of reality." So many artists explore the depth of shadow and the scintilations of light and the sensations of color that seem to me to be foreign to a sufficient natural beauty of my world.

That said, diversity in perception is a big place.

Every photography is an illusion. And photographs that aren't intended to show the world the way the eye sees it are still photographs.

Take up knitting. Photography has never been reality. All photographs are an illusion, an abstraction of reality.

Are you really wanting to say that "the depth of shadow and the scintilations of light and the sensations of color" are foreign to natural beauty??? I've always thought they are not just a part of it, but the major part of beauty (natural or otherwise).

What else is there? What constitutes "beauty" in visual perception if not exactly those things?

To me photography has always been a vignette of life. Capturing those sometimes moments that may never happen again. Even a scenic will not be the same when you return. So I deal in reality and find disturbing people that want to manipulate life in a dark room. We see to much manipulation, no matter what the excuse is. There is beauty all around if we will open out eyes. And it does not have to be manufactured.

Don't forget in the film days we created illusions in the darkroom only now is it made easier to do, however the same effects could be made under the enlarger.

One doesn't have to have an "excuse" for manipulating photographs. It has been a part of photography since its very beginnings. You don't have to do it, or like it, but don't disparage those who do.

The ability to See is a gift. Enjoy the gift and let others enjoy it in their own way.

Right on. So many replies to this eternal discussion start out with an apology like "all I did was minimal PP." I think that many come from the fact that they don't like computers or don't understand them and need an excuse. To each his own, but don't act like it is a crime to manipulate a photo.. All photos are manipulated either in camera or PP. (Yawn, think this has been covered a zillion times already)

I believe people who shun post processing either don't possess the skills to create a better photo or have never tried.

At first I thought your way of reality. After considering that photography is an art, my mind has been altered.
