Over 300,000,000 computers are now running Windows 10. This is the most user friendly OS on the market, if you learn to use it. (Actually, most of the concepts will be familiar to any Win 7 user, but the interface is different.

The point of this post is that July 30 is the last day for free updates to Win 10. After that there will be a $120 charge.

Here's the whole story:

I am very hesitant to put this on my 10+ year old laptop. It has 3 G Ram (max). and only about 225 GB of storage on hard drive. It has many problems, keeps dropping drives etc. I had it repaired last year for $199 and it wasn't long before it started to malfunction again. I did buy a new laptop w/ W10 and when that is up and running, I will try the 'Fix Me Stick' on the old laptop and see if that solves its problems. Once I have everything off the old computer, then maybe I'll try to install W10 and I'll have a backup.

With a laptop that old it would be good to run the Windows 10 compatibility check. I have one of a similar age and the graphics chip is not compatible. One just a little younger was fine and runs very well with Windows 10 as do the other machines.

Good luck.

I have a hunch MS will extend that deadline.

I would not upgrade such an old machine.

You might not, but I can tell you from experience that it may be fine.

I have two old Toshiba laptops, both date from 2006. Neither were supported under Windows 7 but worked just fine. One is working very well with Windows 10 - better than with Windows 7 or XP - the other has a graphics chip that is not compatible with Windows 10 and is just now being retired and parts will support the other old Toshiba.

Don't be too hasty to kill old equipment. Many things still work well with Windows 10. They show their age, sure, but can still be useful.

Palm Tungsten and Palm TX syncing with Windows 10 anyone? Works just fine! :D :D

HP Laserjet 1012 on Windows 10? Works pretty well. :D :D

Neither were supported under Windows 7.

My main concern would be older driver availability. 3 gigs of RAM is pretty lean as well. You can actually breath new life into an older machine by replacing your old mechanical HD with an SSD.

I don't disagree with basic guidance, but my comments are based upon actual experience. Go back and read again where I suggested running the compatibility check which actually identifies if drivers are not available or problematical. How many machines have you upgraded?

Surely it is up to the individual whether they consider a machine worth upgrading to Windows 10 or not, especially if suitable drivers are available?

A ten year old machine is on the edge. It can work, but whether or not is is worth the cost of an SSD is very debatable, given Margo's description. However, as a backup it may be worth trying the OS upgrade. The Toshiba that I upgraded isn't super fast, but does OK with an HDD and 1.5GB of RAM, soon to be two whole GB of RAM!

I like Peterff's suggestion to do a compatibility check before attempting W10. That makes sense. I am not that computer savy to change hard drives. So when my new computer is up and running and I have transferred all my files to the new computer, I'll use my 'fix me' stick to see if that cleans up my problems, and then I would try to update it to W10. I will have nothing to lose by then, just have a backup computer to use. If not, I don't think this computer owes me anything. It's been pretty good for 10+ years. Thanks everyone, for all your suggestions. Even though this was not my thread, I really do appreciate your help.

Oh I don't disagree- I have installed Windows 10 on 11 machines at this point (Mostly Laptops) and only on 2 did I have an issue. I like Windows 10 It's my all time favorite OS so far. I have found that on a few instances the compatibility check didn't catch everything ahead of time on a couple of Levovo laptops. Have you tried the SSD trick in any of your machines?

I have three SSDs in my primary system. The laptops are fine with HDDs for the use they get. The very old Toshiba wouldn't justify the expense.

This is great news! it would be nice if MS would stop their regular practice of trying to get me to instal it so they can engage in monitoring activity that would cause a fuss if the government did it.

I have had Windows 10 for just about a month. I purchased a new Dell Inspiron 3847 and I have to say that this OS is big and powerful. The only down side for me is that Windows did not retain some of the features I had on my old Dell Inspiron with Vista Home Premium. Now I do not have Windows Live Photo Gallery and Windows Photo Gallery. I thought both of those PP Editing programs were excellent for someone like me who wanted to get exposed (no pun intended) to PP Editing Software. I am confident that I will be very happy with Windows 10. I am not in love with the fact that there will no longer be any free upgrades available after the date expires.

Rgds,

Tony

It does have Photo Gallery. Look in All Apps.
