I use a histogram a lot in post processing. It shows the relative values of the highlights to deepest shadows and lets you accurately enhance either with a levels adjustment.
Look at the examples of a levels adjustment I made just an hour ago. Notice the difference in the final shot by sliding the highlight slider toward the left. It's easy to get exposure correct using a histogram.
