What is the best Inkjet Photo Printing Paper?
I have not purchased any Paper in several years, 10 years ago I moved away from my home with a dedicated space to store all thing photo graphic, I used to keep at least 5 types of paper on hand at all times. Now I have a small area in the corner of a large room with one filing cabinet drawer for my storage. I just used up my last sheet of 8.5 x 11 paper this week end. I don’t print nearly as much since I moved south. I like Glossy, for most of the general printing that I do, and it’s mostly family shots anymore. Occasionally some Art shots of flowers and gardens. I do still have some Kodak pro portrait matt paper that cost $5 a sheet when I bought it 12 years ago; it is stored in an air tight box in a safe. I bought it for a special project many years ago. I used one sheet recently and it still makes a brilliant proto. Sorry I digress, so please shower me with recommendations. Many Thanks.

What printer do you have. That would be key in making an educated recommendation.

Red River paper company has a variety of types and paper finishes. I have used their paper for several years on epson printers and like the results.

I use Epson metallic paper for my best photos. I also use Canon paper, although my printer is an Epson R3000.

And, if I might add, you can get a sample pack at a reasonable cost and see what paper you like.

Like so many things, there is no BEST. There are papers that work better with certain ink sets and there are images that look great on one type off paper and not as good on another. Metallic papers can make some images really pop and do nothing for another. For some images, the fine art papers from Epson, Canson, Moab, or Hannemule produce stunning images but certainly are not worth the extra cost and handling issues for other images.

Some papers have optical brighteners added, some are non-acidic. Some of the fine art papers have a warm tone to them that can be fantastic on a classical portrait and awful on another image.

I'm not sure how anyone can tell you what the best paper is for you. As is already noticed, we can tell you what works best for us. Mostly brands are specified with the odd brand and designation, but curiously missing is under what circumstances is that paper the best.

CaptainC, as usual, is on the right track with different photos need different papers. I would suggest you purchase some sample packs from different manufacturers and print a sampling of your work. If all you shoot is dandelions then you only need a few photos under different lighting situations. If, like most of us, you shoot many different scenes then you will need a good smattering of shots to test print. I would recommend making a collage of shots so you only have to run a single sample print and can then use the remaining sheets for any shots that look great.

Once you have what type of shots look best with that paper try another manufacturers sample pack. And in time you will have the answer to "YOUR" query.

I have great results with Ilford paper through my Canon Pixma9500 Mk.II printer. I've actually been using Ilford paper for the past fifteen years.
