Does the DX mode on FX bodies work, rendering a good quality photograph?
The DX mode on an FX body just uses a smaller section of CMOS sensor. This will automatically occur when you attach a designated DX lens. You will see "cropped" image in viewfinder. Captured image will appear to be cropped, as if you had used a longer FX lens. The pixel count used for DX capture is significantly less than full FX sensor, but not that noticeable unless you dramatically crop during PP.

Thanks. Weird, your post showed up as an * until I quoted you in response.
Back on subject...so there's no difference in quality? Also are the MPs reduced like a 26 MP FX to 13 MP DX?
You answered my question when the full post came through. That's probably what happened with the *.

I use the * as a bookmark while I compose text. You will now see more added to my post above.
Auto-conversion from FX to DX format will reduce pixels used by about 35%. A 26 Mp FX sensor will use only about 17.3 Mp when in DX mode.

Thanks. I just want to make sure my DX lenses are used and useful if I go FF.

I started with Nikon D70S and bought several lenses for specific things for that format. I then upgraded to both a D300 (DX) and a D3 (FX). I use my lenses interchangeably putting thgether the camera and lense for what I wish to accomplish or what I wish to carry.
For those of us like me who are just getting a grasp of DX vs FX, suggest you read the following:
http://kenrockwell.com/nikon/fx-dx-future.htm. The Ken Rockwell article was printed in 2008. Also on Yahoo, search "Nikon FX" without the quotes.
