Your story about your Austin brings back my cat Buffi. She was along hair smoky grey Persian. She needed to be brushed every day and would only eat canned food, none of this bagged stuff, and of course only certain flavors. She was scared to death of outdoors, never went, wouldn't set in the window like a normal cat. She had to lay under my feet so I would trip over her. Had the stinkiest litter box on the block. I would change it every three to four days and still had to wear a gas mask. She would lay in my lap with her purring motor going so I couldn't read my book. When she was thirteen she got cancer, you could see it in her eyes that she was hurting. We had to take her to the Vet.
She curled up in my arms, started to purr and went to sleep. I cried like a baby; that was in 2003 and I still miss the little fur ball.

he does have arthritis and some neurological issues and possibly some thyroid issues too. this week he started haveing trouble walking his toes bend under and he walks on his nuckles he trembles like he is cold. i dont want my boy to be in pain. but i have that "what if he can get through it" in thye back of my head.
hardest thing i have ever had to think about by far

That toes under symptom sounds like a pinched nerve in his spine. Take him to the vet and see, perhaps, if spinal stretching or cortisone injections will help. For a terrier, 13 y/o still has some time left.

Don't know if this helps, but I found comfort in it when I lost my boxer because of some contaminated dog food that ultimately ended up in a recall about 5 years ago.

The Rainbow Bridge Poem

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

I share your thoughts whenever I look at my 16 year old Jack Russell Terrier that I have loved her entire life. I saw this recently....

"He whom we love and lose...is no longer where he was before. He is now wherever we are!"

Also....read Racing in the Rain (Garth Stein)It's about human/dog loving and losing from the DOG's point of view.Great stuff.

Be there for Austin when he makes his last car ride. You can pet him and tell him that you love him and that you will see them again.

Had Sparky for 21 years. Held him and said I love you as the doctor gave him the injection. So many of us have been through this moment you are experiencing, we are all praying for you and Austin. Hugs and kisses. God bless.

His Name is Austin, he is a 13 year old miniature pincher, i met him when he was 6 weeks old and he has been my "son" ever since.
He is my joy , makes me smile and laugh he makes me feel better when im sad or upset.
i have no idea what im gunna do with out him
unfortunately old age is getting the better of him and its time to make the dreaded decision on when to end his pain.

I'm so sorry that you have to go through this. I have been through it many times. I give my friend the relief he/she greatly deserves and then I go to the shelter to give some relief to another, usually a young to mid-aged sweetheart that desperately needs a home. It makes me feel good and gives the new pup the love they wouldn't have otherwise.
I feel that my friend that just went to the bridge is looking down and saying "thank you, well done".
None of that keeps it from hurting, but the new friend helps fill the hole in my heart, left by the last one.

Very well said! If more people thought like this, there would be so fewer Dogs and Cats in shelters and so many full hearts. I plead to anyone who gives an animal a new forever home, PLEASE choose a shelter animal!!

Molly, I have never been sorry I gave a shelter dog a home. They just seem to know and quickly become totally devoted to you.

I know that nothing can dull the pain, but I will be praying for both of you.
There just has to be a special place for the animals we love.
I have to believe that.

God Bless
