I just mentioned Flipboard and Edge to describe the big square where a number of things are like "news," "photos," etc. The square is a popup from the start menu in Windows 10. However, the place to select photos for sending to a flash drive or other media is Pictures under My PC. Once selected, right click and a menu will pop up with the "send to" option. That's all they needed to tell me. I didn't need any work done on my computer. Actually, if I did, the folks at BitDefender would do it for me for free. I've been very happy with BitDefender since I switched from McAfee. I've had no computer glitches since I made the switch. No freezes....nothing.

I am not a fan of either McAfee or Symantec. BitDefender, Zonealarm, Malwarebytes, Trend Micro, are all much better and more reliable. One of the best is Sophos, but they are aimed at large corporate network installations. Sophos was one of the first to alert the world to the swarm of new Mac viruses. My friend kept insisting that his problem couldn't be a virus; after all he had a Mac. It cost him dearly.

I've been using AVG for 10 years. In the past 3 years, I've I also subscribed to Malwarebytes. I've never had a virus or malware threat that was not successfully handled. I also have free Spybot, but don't run it very often. My PC is on 24/7, other than an occasional and necessary reboot.

The same guy calls me too- I just tell him he has reached Microsoft support and ask why he's calling so I can solve his problem. Or sometimes he reaches the FBI hotline!!

I told them I had a Mac the first time. The second time, I acted as though I had a PC and they started asking what I was seeing on screen in terms of right-click menus. If they call again, I'll grab my work laptop and give them all the wrong info.

There's a little button on my phone which depresses when you hang up. Someday it will automatically recognize Indian dialect and automatically hang up. Until then I just hang up even before he finishes his message.

At least with my 3 year MacBook warranty I can call them and get professional help. They were really yokels at Microsoft.

My MacBook is 6 years old and I've never paid a dime for support. Yeah, I think I'll be switching to a PCÂ…

I had the occasion to contact MS support three weeks ago. I lost the right click context menu on Start (Win 10). I attempted all sorts of fixes, but was not able to resolve the issue. An MS Support technician worked for about 1.5 hours on my issue but she was not able to resolve it. She then indicated it had to be sent to the next level and it would cost $100. I said OK - it was worth the cost to me. They worked for 1.5 hours and could not resolve it and said Win 10 would have to be reinstalled. I did not want to do that so I was immediately refunded the $100 charge. MS support was terrific.

Eventually, I solved the issue myself by recovering a backup file via Acronis. I knew I was able to do that before contacting MS Support, but was trying to circumvent that solution.

I feel most of the "bad mouthing of MS" is out of anger and frustration with technology. However, I think it is misplaced anger. Most issues have not been caused by Microsoft. Computers are not intuitive. There is a very steep learning curve!! (yes with Apple too). Instead of embarking on a mission to learn about the technology of computers, many users are looking for shortcuts and instant learning. In my opinion, that route will eventually fail. I'm not attempting to criticize. I empathize with their frustrations, but I do grow weary of the assigning blame to Microsoft. (or Canon, Nikon, Samsung, Adobe ...) The frustrated users might first look at themselves. It is not easy to take responsibility for "my part" in causing failure. It is always simpler to look at "the other guy". However, it may not always be an honest evaluation.

SteveR: This is not aimed at you or at any other UHHer. It is my editorial comment. I hope I have not offended anyone.

In my case, however, the fix did not require them taking over my computer and doing all their fixes. It was simple. It was just a matter of telling me how to transfer photos. I had pulled them up from "collection" and there was not an opportunity to transfer from there, although it was possible to do p/p from there. Go figure.

I got a MacPro a few months ago and put Windows 10 on it. <snip>

Well when you put Windoze on a Mac it acts like a PC and these types of things happen. I don't think it's fair to call it a scam, because they fixed the issue and also you have expected issues when you loaded Win10. This site alone has been full of reports of Win10 issues. Not that it is bad just that there are always issues with new OS releases and this is no exception. I suggest that if you want to run Windows that badly, then sell the Mac and buy a PC , you will be happier and money ahead for some good camera bling.

I'm just saying If you really want the "Mac experience" then let the Mac be the Mac, run OS X, not Windows X, let go of that L brain PC mentality and open your mind to another way of doing things.

I appreciate your sentiments. Actually, my Windows 10 has been working great. As it turned out I didn't have an issue at all.....I just didn't understand how something was supposed to be done in Windows 10, and couldn't find an answer when I googled the question. The problems stems from the fact that there is two ways to pull up your photos in Windows 10. One way you pull them up, from Collections, there is no opportunity to copy them to a flash drive. I didn't realize this. After cleaning my registry and messing with my drivers, for which I was supposed to pay $110, the tech finally pulled up Pictures under My PC, the other way to pull up photos, and their is a way to send photos to a flash drive from there. As you can see....I did NOT need to have my computer worked on. I just needed to be pointed to the correct place. As I've said previously, BitDefender has kept my computer in good working order. Since this tech has messed with it I have had some issues, and I won't let somebody take over my computer again.

Yes, that has got to be a scam. Let them into your machine, and see what damage they can do. (DON'T).

I get those calls all the time. They continue to call, even 'tho I ask them not to. I can often recognize them before I answer, and then just kill the call.

I've played with them a few times, told them I was running Linux (which I do a little for CNC), told them I didn't have any computers, told them I couldn't find the "start" menu, anything I could think of. But that's a waste of my time. Fun sometimes, 'tho.

I once told (Mr. Patel) I had an Apple-Mac computer (A wind-up)."I'll just hand you over to my colleague" he said. To which I replied, " How can you deal with Apple-Mac computers if you are Microsoft Windows Technical Department?. They are a rival company". A spluttering of Asian gobbldegook came from the (Microsoft) Technical man, and I eventually let him know his scam was blown and I was not caught by their lies. Depending how busy I am, I either lead them on with inane 'How do I do that'? comments , playing dumb, or just hang-up straight away. They are a PITA !!!

These ads are always first when even a search engine is used to find a solution to a problem. They appear to be Microsoft Support Sites, show the logos, and the address shown to login with says Microsoft.com. Not true. Hold your mouse over the link and read what else pops up in the address. Quite often the full link directs you to another country where they may put spyware or ransomware on your computer.
