I was in your situation with the exact same gear. The SB600 will not trigger wirelessly using the popup flash on the camera. The SB600 doesn't have "Commander Mode". You'll have to move up a not in flashes or buy a coiled extension cord to fire the unit with the camera. There are after market remote triggers but you won't get TTL(thru the lens) control. Sorry, been there, done that.

Sorry but have to diagree with Bob..I happen to own the sb600 and the D90 and it certainly does fire off camera using the flash from the camera. I will send a good tutorial for you .If you follow his advice..you will be all set.

so....when using a speedlight with "commander mode" , the built in flash can be disabled? Is there a problem with built in and external firing together? ( aside from wanting specific directional light I mean). This seems like an important feature to look for when buying a flash unit. ( still haven't ventured there yet)

You mis-read both authors question and Bob's answer. She wants ONLY the remote SB-600 to fire with no built-in flash from camera.

On your D90:

Use P, S, A or M exposure mode.

Press MENU. Go to the yellow wrench menu, and be sure CSM MENU is set to DETAILED. Otherwise you won't see the next setting!

Go to the CSM menu which looks like a purple pencil. Set #19, Flash Mode, to "COMMANDER MODE." Further click to the right to set the commander mode to "TTL."

You also may set the commander mode to Manual or AA, which are other modes to fire the remote flash. The SB-600 only works with TTL and Manual. You set the manual power level at the camera.

Don't forget to POP UP THE BUILT-IN FLASH!

Direct from Ken Rockwell link you supplied.
Unfortunately the OP wanted to trigger the SB600 [b]without[/] using the on-camera flash...

But the good news is that I learned how to set the SB600 to work as a wireless slave! I'll take it, thank you for that!

correct, i was wondering if i could only get the speedlight to fire off of the camera without having the built in flash firing. I guess not, perhaps ll try to put tape over my built in to see what happpens!

Your built-in camera flash can trigger a remote SB-600. No camera flash = no slave flash, unless you use a small attachment that you can mount on your hot-shoe, which will radio-trigger off-camera strobes set-up as slaves.

Your manual should cover this subject.

sorry my response was to Bob M who seems to think you cannot use a commander mode with sb600 paired with D90..which you certainly can.Taping the flash unit ..will cause the sb600 not to fire..its reads off the flash..no flash no fire..likewise

The built-in flash, as well as the A and B Groups, can be set to
fire and be factored into the exposure, or turned off individually,
based on your lighting requirements. Toggle the Multi-selector
to the right to enter the Mode window for the item you would
like to turn off. Toggle the Multi-selector down until you see
the dashed lines. This means that the built-in flash or selected
Speedlight will NOT fire. Its a bit confusing because you do see the flash going off but it is merely a signal.

Traditionally the term "wireless" refers to RF based signals.
The term "slave" can refer to a remote flash unit getting its signal from any source i.e. on-camera,hard wired, RF,or trigger strobe.

In the case of the D90 and SB600 combo discussed here the configuration turns the SB600 into a flash triggered remote slave. It's triggered by the strobe on the camera. The use of channels and groups always causes confusion in this discussion.

Camera mfgs today are really screwing up the photo culture by twisting and mixing up the terms like "wireless" and "micro and Macro" etc.

Life hasn't been the same since they replaced ASA with ISO.

As far as I know, you have to use your on camera flash to activate your Speedlite flash. It serves as the remote for the off camera flash. Hope this helps.

Understood for sure but the point was that Nikon and Rockwell refer to the slave function as "wireless" which caused some to think it was a radio link and not a light based trigger.

Thanx
