HDR with film

I know that film has good dynamic range but when I scan them or print them I can't get the whole dynamic range.
I made 2 scans of the same negative one dark and one light then combined them using Photomatix. I like the result so I think I will pay for the license.

That works. I had to cut and paste before HDR. It is best to use 3 copies, plus 2 EV, one correct, and one -2 EV. This gives a better results. David

Yes, it can work, I've done it several times using Vue Scan. Vue Scan allows you to make one scan then save images at various brightness levels which can then be combined in Photoshop or Photomatix.

What resolution are your scans? Are they TIFFS?

I scan at 3200 dpi which gives me about 4500x3000 pixels. I scan it directly in photoshop so the files were saved as PSD. Then I used Photmatix to merge them into JPG.

Thanks. I still shoot some black and white film in both 35mm & 120. The local lab will scan to several grades of jpegs or TIFFS. I actually thought of shooting three exposures in the camera on a tripod and then doing an HDR. I might try it as an (expensive) experiment.
