depends on how old. if it is a commodore 64, won't work, if it runs windows 7 or higher it should work. check with adobe to be sure which operating system is compatible. it will not be the age of the computer as much as the version of windows, or if on an apple, the version of ios.

I was running Lightroom 5.7 on a Mac that was way
back on Mountain Lion (10.8) which is 3 major releases behind the current. No problems.

Just a clarification from a Mac User, ios refers to the operating system on an iPhone, and iPad, iPod, or a similar device. If you are refering to a MacIntosh Computer, the Operating System is usually refered to as Mac OS, currently it is Mac OS 10, or Mac OS X (think roman numerals).

I wouldn't try to run it on a Univac

You need to define older to me please. No problem on a 5-7 year old computer. It also depends upon the computer and the Intel Processor and RAM.

So much depends on how much memory and processor speed. Adobe doesn't state it needs 8 gig, but any less and slower processors in general, you will crawl.

depending how old, you may not be architected for 8 gig. Need 64 bit OS

The minimum requirements are pretty low, but with minimum hardware, you'll have minimum performance. Check out the specs of the software and the computer. A memory upgrade is the cheapest way to get better performance.

download the free trial and see how it works.

make copies of your photos into a test directory and play with them.

That's a little like diving in the water and not knowing how deep. I would suggest they gather the specs of their machine, look at what Adobe says they require, and then if you meet the requirements try the test version. Other wise you get stuck and have to uninstall etc,

It will depend on a couple of things (especially with Windows as I am not sure about the Apple Mac ).

1. Lightroom has both a 32 bit and a 64bit version available in the download so you need to install the correct version.

2. Since this is an older computer, it will possibly need plenty of extra hard drive space allocated as virtual memory so that the computer can write extra data to that space rather than deal with it in memory. (this will make editing much slower than on a newer computer running in 64bit maxed out with memory and a large roomy drive.
NOTE: the above will probably also apply to older Mac also. But, if you have an old Apple II, old Apple III, or Apple Lisa, you should give them to me and I will get you a tolerably decent computer for that old trash. :)
Note, I wouldn't try to run it on anything older than Windows 7 but I have heard of people running it on XP and Vista. I don't know how much success they have had.

No its more like thowing a rock in to see how deep; if you don't like it uninstall; does not take that long.

Even if you look at all the specs, that does not tell you how well you would like the sw. Some people have strong opinions about how lr works; you get to kill 2 birds with one stone.

It really comes down to what camera you are using and what you do in post. Your system if old and outdated, it will struggle with panoramic, focus stacking, HDR, using add-in like TOPAZ or NIK, converting batch files from raw to jpeg or raw to dng, downloading hi-res images. It can limit your creativity
