I'm sorry that I missed most of your tremendous effort and creativity, Piet. Minnie mentioned mystery story; I should have tried harder

  balanced! Met your vision completely. I like how the contrast between black and white on the squares was subdued. I like the focus on the far facing rank, I like the grit. It has a raiders of the lost ark feel - these guys mean business and the queen and bishops are marvelous.

It's one of the few I pre-visualized,and all thanks to you!
- Ultimately the final output was decided by the players, old and gritty, just like they are!

Thank you again! S-

Fascinating shot, with an oddly graphic look that may be related to processing or just the materials the set is made from. It isn't as scary as Piet's but it does have a surreal look of its own that is enhanced by the OOF pieces with their backs to us in their staring match with their opponents.

I am still wrestling with this chapter. Here's one from today and one oldie.

In my addled mind, the large items (the water blast in the first) and the building (in the second) are balanced by the smaller items that have special qualities that strengthen them (the bird, which is alive, in the first) and the ball (which is a hot bright color and closer, in the second)

I'm sure I'm wrong, but folks, some of this stuff defies the gravity of my mind. I am convinced I am seeng in geometry more than in perceptual weight.

From what I've been reading, and photo examples online, yours are exactly right :-D

I am looking at number two and am thinking that the ball and the cabin and reflection must be around equal in perceptual weight - perhaps the ball is even heavier. My eye just keeps bouncing between them. The house pulls the eye from the ball and then when I am looking at that, the ball just pulls it back.

Thank you! I had envisioned a child's-eye view standing behind the lines looking out between the legs of others at the enemy, but when it came to set it made more sense to shoot from a little above. And the image was pretty flat so I thought I'd age it making it look like a wanted graphic from the past.

It was fun going from pre-visualization, to set up, to processing it out, but mostly watching it take on a life of it's own. Thank you again! S-

The first is, light and dark, violent and static, undulating and outlines. Definite balance.
The second is jut beautiful and needs to be framed! S-

I'm going to chat a lot about what both Minnie and Piet have said, but wanted to post this first.

Shot this morning for the exercise. I feel there are two instances of visual mass (per author) that balance the image in that regard. And my deliberate placement of horizon line is an example of imbalance (we hardly ever want the horizon line directly in the center of the frame anyway, right?) which focuses our attention on the field, and emphasizes how much work this farmer has ahead of him.

Please feel free to disagree with my analyses :)

To me the tractor has much more visual weight because it is connected to the line that leads us through the image, and we know it is moving, so it has a dynamic "weight" as well. The balance comes because I know where it's been due to the lines, but for me 90% of the weight is now in the upper right third.

I told you I think different. I can't get the weight thing settled in my head.

I like how the tractor is on (close to) the horizon. I see a triangle where the tractor is the main subject with the trees to the left and the foreground detail grounding and "balancing" it...

Minnie and Piet, thanks so much for your interesting and detailed feedback. This chapter has made us all think harder than usual :)
