I recently took a ferry ride and captured these folks. Perhaps not technically "Street" but we have no category for "Deck" photos!

Perhaps you misunderstand the term "Street Photography", which is a misnomer that does not reference either the subject or the location of the photography. Even more out of place is the concept that a picture of someone sleeping in public is Street by definition.
Street Photography shows the relation between humans and their surroundings. Any human activity can be used to demonstrate such relationships. Even images with no people can do that. And no connection to any street is required.
"Deck Photography" probably has to be taken literally as being related to a "deck". Very different, and not mutually exclusive from Street either!
Incidentally, the third image, of the mother and child, has a lot of strength!
The first two have no value, and the last image is mildly interesting.

Thanks for the critique, I'll keep trying to improve. One out of four is a .250 batting average, not too bad for a rookie in his first season in the majors! I'm encouraged!

Other people will see it differently than I do, so maybe one out of four isn't the real score! Also, I assume the reason you posted all of them is because
you like them all. That's batting 1000!

I like them all. In my book you've hit a home run :). Keep doing what you're doing.

Yes ~ for me #3 has some kind of mystique to it; maybe even evokes a question.
But, #4 (the kids playing with the wind in their faces) really gets to my heart as all of my children and grandchildren live far away.
You're batting .500 in my record book.

That people see things differently is what makes photography (and I guess, art in general) so interesting. Looking at pictures on the Hog, I'm often enlightened by what others see in them that I missed! I struggle with composition all the time and often regret not having taken shots from different angles. At least I'm getting better at avoiding trees that appear to be growing out of peoples heads!

Thanks Hershel, you have encouraged me to keep trying!

You're well ahead of this rookie! I'm still chopping off the top of people's heads, or at the very least, mashing his or her head against the top of the frame. (Well, not always, but I'm sure someone here remembers their "rookie" days.) :D

That is according to a very good Rule Of Thumb! Never do that!
The Rule Of Art overrules the Rule Of Thumb though!
Do that any time it looks better! If it does look better... chop off heads or hands or feet, tilt horizons, clip highlights, put negative space behind the direction of movement, shoot into the light and anything else that adds drama or beauty to an image.
The idea is a dramatic and beautiful image, not a pretty and perfect check list of the Rules followed!

Thank you for that artistic advice. I've never thought of myself as an artist. Mother was, brother is, daughter is, so I think I do know a tad about it and I know I ain't one [an "artist"]. Art seems "all the rage" in photography, right now; and I'm currently reading an article asking if I make photographs, or take photographs [of course it marginalizes those who"take"].
I'm concluding that I TAKE photographs. If my camera captures an acceptable image, it's because I found it; I did not transfer it to a computer and create it. Greatly admire all of you who do, but that's not me.
There seems little room in the photographic community for non-artists, right now, so I'm delighted that photography is "an individual sport".
P.S.: Shoulda added a smiley face of some sort, so's not to trigger someone's emotions.
:D

Thanks Van, I appreciate your comments. Street photography is fun and quite challenging, you have to be quick sometimes or the shot opportunity is gone! The girls in my #4 picture were jumping up and down, but by the time I got to a position to take a shot, they had stopped, turned and were standing with arms spread having finished their routine. Got what I could, but it could have been better had I been there earlier!

I agree wholeheartedly! For me, the trick is to avoid the Rule of Dumb!
