I think it is a Nutria. We saw one in a canal and thought it was a beaver or muskrat. If not a Nutria, perhaps a Muskrat.

I don't think it is a Muskrat. I shot the pictures of a Muskrat three days ago while shooting ducks and geese. I know the image quality is not the best due to being at the extreme range of my Sigma 150-500 lens...

They really look like the one I took the pic of. The tail for sure. I will probably never see one again?? But will keep an eye out. They are very shy
