Guess what when your kid has surgery on their leg they can't run away from you.So I got a shot of my son.

I was trying to figure out a lighting set up for a Runway shoot that my Step Daughter is in at the Paul Mitchell hair school here in town. I was asked to shoot head shots for all the models after their hair is done. I turned this into a black and white because it was too girly fashion for a boy. The light set up is a butterfly with a Apollo Orb above the model close to the camera axis angled down 45degs. and a small strip box horizontally at about wait level pointing up at about a 30 deg. angle. Behind the model to the left side (camera left) there is medium size strip box feathering across the backside of the models check and hair. For the background there is one light right behind the model shot directly into the white background.

Greg, I think you've made quite a good job of this portrait, and it looks quite professional. You've got important elements working --ie... the catch lights are present which look convincing, good modelling ( shadow contrast etc ) and the subject has an engages the viewer. For a female , you would possibly want a softer, less gritty and less contrast, but here, for your son, the exposure is appropriate and works well .Great work!--D.

Thanks for looking, I posted this shot to get some feed back because I was hoping I was on the right track with the lighting set up . I did add a lot of grit to try toughen up the look.
My step daughter came over after I posted the shot of my Son and sat for a variation of this lighting set up, so I will post that shot here. She will probably kill me for posting it since she came over after work with her hair a mess and make up messed up.

Greg--excellent again, and technically probably better than the one of your son ( I'm no expert really but portraiture has interested me for some time). You've obviously got a well thought out lighting system-- looks like you are using a two light source idea. This portrait has a beautiful soft ambience about it and your step-daughter looks like a professional model.
Greg, are you running a business? I did portraits of brides when doing wedding photography, but only ever had a minute or two for the shot, with no control hardly over back ground, and whatever lighting was on hand.
Ok, so thanks for that posting & look forward to seeing more,
Rgds,..D.

Good lookin' kids!
Very nice work on the portraits. I honestly can't find anything I'd change. My first thought when I saw him was "Peter Hurly style" Your daughter took it to the next level. No offense to your son, but we all know, women just look better in general, and you nailed everything in that one.

Thanks for looking, I see what your talking about "Peter Hurly style" I didn't even realize I made it that way, but I think I might try this style again. Ashley is so easy to take good pictures of I often take it for granted.
