Query from a first time poster

I have been reading the UHH Forum for several months now and figured it was time to say hello and post a question. I am looking for a small camera to stow in my fly-fishing vest and motorcycle tour pack. I presently shoot a Canon XTi with all Canon L glass, 100mm Macro, 24-105mm zoom and 100-400mm super zoom. I want a camera that is small, light and easy to use (especially if I hand it to a fishing guide with little camera experience while a fish is gasping before I release it).
Do any of you own Canon Elphs and/or Power Shots and would you recommend one over the other or a particular model within a series? I would entertain another brand but I am using Canon software on my computer and would like to keep things simple.
Thanks in advance and I enjoy the forum.

I got my first Canon Elph in about 1998. It was a film camera in the APC format. It was a great system. The film came in sealed cartridges, and you just stuck it into the camera and started shooting. It gave me a choice of several picture sizes. When the film was exposed, I'd have it developed and get the cartridge with negatives inside, the prints, and a card with thumbnails of the prints.

Moving ahead a few years, I got an almost identical digital Elph, the 800SD IS. It's a small camera with a viewfinder and Auto, with many options. I've taken thousands of shots with it, and it has worked flawlessly.

If you are interested in an Elph, I would suggest you read comparisons and online reviews.

Oh ya... I carry around all the time my Canon Powershot A1200... The reason I brought it was that it has a VIEWFINDER, one of the few that do... Its a 12.1 and does a very good job... New on ebay for about 75 and up....

Boy, what a difference a viewfinder makes! I recently tried a nice Sony, w/o a viewfinder. I found it to be hit or miss.

I suggest something waterproof, like the Nikon AW Series. (Note: They can be had much cheaper at Costco.)

O.K. "FTP": You may have read some of my rambling before, but here is a shot anyway. Carry an Olympus SP800UZ camera. It's small, light weight, has a super zoom lens and yes, its a point and shoot--but with many, many preset programs.
AND it is inexpensive. ALYN

I have a canon powershot which is about 5 years old. It's compact, about the size of a pack of cigarettes and I'm very happy with it. Takes nice pics and is easy to use.

my advice...is if your going to use it on the water and primarily outside...get something with a good ol' fashioned viewfinder...if your on the water and its sunny...without a viewfinder it will be literally "point and shoot".

Been there...done that...got the t shirt.

OK. I noticed you are a present Canon user.
My advice to you is to consider something like the Canon Powershot sx40. It will be less of a learning curve for you as opposed to switching brands.
I know this from experience, I own a Nikon d300,d90,and a canon powershot sx40.I have ordered a Nikon d800 and am buying the Nikon coolpix 510 in a few days. Quite a bit of a difference between the two brands concerning learning their functions.

I'm a big fan of the Panasonic Lumix bridge cameras you get the features of a DSLR (but a small sensor) with a super-zoom Leica lens in a small package.
