While I am perusing the Ugly Hedgehog - Photography Forum this morning I have the Oakland, CA channel 2 morning news live streaming to my computer. They are featuring a story about the new Tesla Model 3 electric car. The reporter is interviewing a long line of people waiting to pre-order the Model 3 which is supposed to be released sometime next year. You'd think it was a new Apple product that the folks were waiting to purchase. Maybe Elon Musk will be the new Steve Jobs. :)

At $35,000 for a Tesla it might be worth waiting for. 200 mile range....not so much.

With only a 200 mile range (100 mile round trip)and a limited capacity for 'stuff' it is useless to me!

I have a friend (who is a dyed-in-the-wool "car guy" )who is standing in line right now to plunk down his $1,000 (refundable) deposit. If it all works out, delivery is late 2017. According to him, the first 200,000 customers qualify for a 7K$ federal incentive, while those over 200,000 qualify for half that - existing Tesla owners get first priority. When asked about range, he pointed out all the nearby "supercharging" stations, which he says will deliver a 1/2 charge in 30 minutes. Most are apparently close to restaurants, so the idea would be to stop every 100-200 miles and get a snack/coffee while charging if you go on a long trip. While I can see it for local driving, it would not be my choice for trips.

I agree. I think when electric cars are produced with legitimate 300+ mile ranges, that is when the mainstream public will start looking at them very seriously as alternatives to fuel powered autos (provided they are cost competitive).

110,000 preorders in the past 12 hours. That's pretty impressive. These cars are going to be great for daily commuters. It will be easy to live with the 200 mile range limitation, and small storage area. It's no different than a lot of other cars in that regard. I have a friend who bought the S series Tesla and absolutely loves it. But at $100k, that's out of my range. I am sure the range will increase over time for electric cars in the not to distant future.

It takes about 5-minutes to fill my tank after a 200 mile trip. I can immediately continue my journey. How long does it take to recharge a Tesla for the next 200 miles? Who is most likely to reach their destination first?

Right. I've seen several articles about that. The 200 mile range wold be fine for me, and there are ltos of free charging stations. A local Tesla owner says he charges up at Nissan dealers. Since they sell the electric Leaf, they have charging stations and let other brands use them. The idea is to encourage the use of electric cars.

But filling a Tesla is free if you use charging stations.

SAD!!!! 1) each working HH is paying to the $7,000 Subsidy and often subsidizing their cost of KWs!!!!! 2) on the cold days and the hot days your 200mi/charge drops... oh and it drops at night also......it's called battery power. So be comfortable and see the road and stop to charge more often. A rich person's toy.... sucking on the the welfare t_t. Popular Bad economics for the country.

What gave you the idea it has "limited capacity for 'stuff' ". The electric motor is quite small, allowing Teslas to have a second trunk up front (where a gas engine would be). They have much more storage space than similarly sized gas cars.

But let's not forget that all those oil companies are ALSO getting tax subsidies (while making billions).

Also, the range on the S & X models in 270 miles per charge. Final specs for the model 3 are in yet, but Tesla say it would be at least 215/charge.

An electric car can be charged at home, over night. Try doing that with a gas car.

Fill it before going home.

I hope the electric grid don't go off during the night ...

That's all probably true, but for the same (or less) money, I could get another Toyota hybrid Camry or Avalon and get 42-45 MPG with no range limitation.

I don't know how quickly they recharge but if you are going over 100 miles one way, how long will you have to be there for the re-charging--not a problem with the hybrids.
