I want to transfer images from those saved on my PC to an SD card. I put the card in the card reader on my PC and after I copy and paste from the PC to the card icon (windows 7) and put the card in my camera (Nikon D 5100) I get a "folder contains no files" message. Card was formatted and is blank before images were put on it.. What am I doing wrong? I have no trouble doing this from a PC to a flash drive and an external hard drive. Thanks in advance for your help

You might not be doing anything wrong. Some camera systems don't work well with files transferred from a PC to a memory card. I know one of mine hates it if I rotate an image via PC, even if it is still on the card in the reader. It will no longer display it in the camera.

I don't believe you can read files from your computer on a camera, (any Brand). If you can see your files on your computer the files are fine.

You might want to consider copying them onto a flash drive instead.

Did you format the card in the camera?

Are the files in a format your camera uses?

I did and I always back up my files to a flash drive with no problem, For some reason I thought you could do the same with a SD card. Thanks for the response.

I haven't tried it but I believe you can transfer photo files to an SD card, and you can read them in your or another computer. Trying to read them in a camera is a totally different animal, and it may not be possible.

You can read the SD cards, but not from your camera. Use a card reader (if you don't have one built in) to read the cards on your computer or tablet.

I just copied two old raw files from my computer to an SD card I am using in my Canon 7D Mark II. One of them was a shot from last Christmas taken with this camera, the other from over a year ago taken with the Canon 60D. I was able to access and view both images in camera as if I have captured them along with the other photos on the card. I don't know how the Nikon folder system is configured, but perhaps you copied them to the wrong location. Or perhaps the images you copied were from a different camera system and are not compatible. when attempting to view them on that body.

Have you confirmed that the images actually made it on to the card by viewing them on your computer?

Make sure the files are in the D5100 folder on the card

Put the SD card in your PC.
Open Explorer and look for your SD card and note the drive letter it usually has the letter "E" but can be others.
Now go to your pictures folder and select which photos you want to transfer to the SD card.
Now right click on the selected items and click on "Send to"
Click the destination which will be the SD card drive.
Your photos will now be transferred.

1. each camera follows a specific directory structure. look at the directory structure when you pull the card in the camera. identify the folder that has the pictures you would normally copy from. put the new pictures in that folder. make sure they are jpg (for now)
2. when you pull the sd card from the computer, right click eject to make sure the computer has completed writing to the card.
