Selection to it's own layer.
I know how to put a selection on it's own layer but what are the advantages of doing so? Thanks.
It would probably help you only if you thought there might be a need to change it.
To make edits or adjustments to only that selection. If you then change your mind, you just delete the layer. If it's not on a separate layer, you might be hitting the "undo" key a lot :)
I have often cut an object and pasted it into a new layer, I do this to clean up the underlying without effecting the object.
Example to show you what my direction is, the glare from the Sun, you know the halo that comes with it. You select just the sun, copy it then paste it making a new layer. Then select the first layer as you working layer.. You can clone or air brush the sky in without worrying about coloring or effecting the sun. Note this is intended as an example. I hope that helps you some. It's also helpful when your colorizing a photo. Like a sweater or flower.
