I've been trying to capture some pics of a beautiful cardinal that has been playing with a bluebird.
They've been in and out of our circular glass bird feeder the last few days. My wife keeps seeing them, but when I get set up .... no shows. Yesterday was cloudy and rainy. Today, brilliant sun but a lot of wind. There are two wind chimes on either side of the bird feeder. Both have wind tails that right now are flopping around like crazy. So far, no birds today in the feeder, and I am just wondering if the active wind chimes are keeping them away. I am sure many of you, who know birds, can answer this quickly.
Thanks

I have wind chimes near but not next to my feeders. The chimes sound doesn't seem to deter the birds. Maybe your wind tails are acting as a "scarecrow" and that is keeping them away.

Chimes can make unnatural sounds that drive birds away. They will feed, but not often. Move the chimes far enough away that the sound is not harsh and is more soothing. Shiny and noisy will drive birds away! Remove the harsh sound and glaring light and they will feed. When they feed you can shoot away. Enjoy.

If they are the kind of wind chimes that reflect light in random ways they are probably spooking the birds. Birds don't like distractions when they are eating - well I don't think they like them any time. They seem to treat the most innocuous distractions as threats and do the safest thing, which is - fly away.
Ok everyone -- thanks
Tomorrow I will take both wind chimes down and try again.

Can the birds see your set up.
I did that, in trying to get redbirds, and they stayed away for 5 days after I took the setup down. They are smart.
I suppose they can see it, but my setup is about 25' away and up on a higher level deck. Also it is close to the corner of the house. I don't think that is the problem. Winds are only half of what they were yesterday, so with the chimes down, I should have better luck.

Wind chimes too close will deter birds.
From what I understand, birds can see in the ultra vilot spectrum. Try to have anything you have near them does not have a preditory look to it.
Also some windchimes have an eyeball reflection and birds generally don't like eyeballs looking back to them. Again, the preditorlook. That sort of like having gazing balls in a garden.
Another thing to scare many birds is to have a garden hose on the ground. They think that's a snake.
Most things if left days and weeks without moving them will be ignored but you never know.

If they could interbreed, their offspring might be interesting. Would they be blue and red? Would they have the head like a cardinal or a bluebird?
Makes me think of the mockingjay from "The Hunger Games". That was a cross-bred of a mocking bird and a blue jay.
Cardinals in particular are skittish, shy, nervous critters.
