Save NCP files in Nikon D3300 camera?

How do I save NCP files in my Nikon D3300 camera?

Cameras like the 810 have a menu, I don't see one, but searches do list the D3300 as being NCP compatible.

Of course you've already been shown how to do this in a custom menu, but why do it in camera at all. If you shoot RAW files these are moot anyway. Not sure what program you use for PP work, but it would be better to do this with a preset in LR for instance. This way you could simply click a button rather than change camera settings back and fourth.

The one exception that I know of is if you use Nikon software, like Nikon Capture. It can open RAW files with camera settings applied. Then you can just tweak a little, or start from scratch. With so much software in the camera, it would be nice if Adobe had the option, particularly useful for casual shooters.

Good place to get an Install from, I've yet to find the info on the download from the camera.

Thanks.

I've been shooting RAW (+JPG) for about 6 months now, and doing a little PP in Nikon Capture NX-D.

Complicated growth path for me, I'm just about to embark on learning Lightroom,

AND, I possibly have a week long photo shoot of young children ages 7-11 at a camp. This camp is for abused, neglected, and abandoned foster kids. the task is to document the children and their activities, while protecting their identities. The children will take home a photo book with full face pictures of themselves plus a selection of the activities photos. Public pictures will not make the kids identifiable. I and others will shoot in JPG only, and at several times during the days will turn over our shots for editing. we can shoot profiles, they have props like dark glasses, masks and costumes they will make, and a little photoshop to minimize identity...

So I want to standardize on some Picture Control settings that I can use for the JPG shoot, or import into NX-D, or hopefully into Lightroom (somehow, if the presets are similar) after the shoot. The shoot is not until June; so if I can merge these tasks, it would be helpful.

I'm running Nikon Capture NX-D, I was expecting an NCP file. Do the parameters just come through? What about into Lightroom? That would work!

As an Owner of a D3300, I have to Ask just What is a NCP file?
I know what a .nef or .jpg or .mov files are but to date never heard of a NCP file

If you shoot RAW, and use the Nikon Capture NX-D post processing program, then apparently the Picture Control Utility which uses NCP or NCP2 files to save and edit the picture control parameters used by Nikon cameras could be useful.

I've seen the parameters in our camera; I'm trying to determine if the D3300 can SAVE/LOAD these parameters. Seems the 810 can (there's a save/load in the menu of the Picture Control settings of the 810), and Nikon docs list the D3300 as supporting PC's, but I haven't been able to determine if we can save/load the NCP files that support these parameters with our cameras.

As has been posted, if you just shoot RAW (as I have been doing) and do all "refining" of the picture in PP, then you can just leave the settings set to neutral (defaults) in the camera, and fix 'em in post.

As I understand it, being able to import/save these parameters in the camera could be useful (nice starting point?)

Stay Tuned! Perhaps some of our list members can shed a little light on this topic! (pun intended).
Stay tuned!

Having a half dozen Nikons I also wonder what that is. No such Nikon file.

Picture control settings are included in the metadata for .nef or jpeg files.

The picture control settings are used when creating the small jpeg embedded in RAW files. It is what you see on the LCD.

If you had scrolled down in the link I provided it shows import to and export from the camera using the Nikon Picture Control Utility. If you don't have it, download it from Nikon.

Ah, live and learn!

Says only for the D810 and later. Also not relevant to RAW shooters.

I've read the documentation for the third time (difficult reading the pink on beige text), and all I see is a menu for the 810. Nothing for D3300.

This time when I opened Picture Control Utility 2, it asks for an image to display as preview (NEF), and I see the save/load commands for files to card and memory. I was able to save a NP2 file to my SD card.

I see the one and only PC menu in the D3300, no save/load menu selections. Probably not available on this entry level camera.

I did learn that there Nikon NP2 downloads, but I haven't found them yet.

I got the impression from the link that the D810 is the first camera with savable custom picture controls. Then I looked in my D800 manual and saw you can do it with the D800 also.

So then I checked my D5300 manual and see it there too.

So RTFM for your D3300. (Read The Fine (ah-hem) Manual). Search the pdf.

Since I shoot RAW this is only of curiosity interest to me.

I've been through both the manuals before.

Yeah, I'm not seeing the load/save menu items in either the camera, the user manual, or the reference manual (pdf's).

Kindly supply page numbers, if indeed, you have found them.
